MaryAlice Garey (nee Benes), age 78 of Sagamore Hills passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday September 9, 2026.
She was born in East Cleveland, Ohio to the late Charles and Alice (nee Eckerman) Benes. She is also preceded in death by a sister Peggy (Tony) Gentile and a nephew Sean Benes. MaryAlice is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years Forrest A. Garey, Jr; three loving sons, Richard (Amy) Garey of Bedford, Daniel (Tammy) Garey of Macedonia and Jeffrey (Susan) Garey of Ravenna; seven cherished grandchildren; Catie, Jonathan, Laura, Lilly, Leah, Lyndsey and Lucas; two sisters, Susan (Keith) Kobus of Columbus and Debbie (Tom) Bartholomew of Florida; a brother Chuck (Barb) Benes of Oak Harbor and a sister-in-law Martha (Joseph) Grzelak of Northfield Center as well as being an aunt, great-aunt and great-great-aunt of many.
MaryAlice Retired from Bedford Schools in 2011 where she was the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools and the local president of the Ohio Public School Employees Union. She loved shopping, always had season passes for Playhouse Square live performances but most of all loved spending time with her family.
Her family wishes to express a deep thanks to all the caretakers that have helped out with her care, Crossroads Hospice and Erin, Heather, Linda, Adriana and Catie.
The family will receive friends 2-5 PM Sunday, September 13, 2026 at Busch-Romito Funeral Home, 521 Broadway Avenue, Bedford, Ohio (440) 232-1441 and from 10-11 AM Monday, September 14, 2026 at Hope United Methodist Church, 79 Center Road, Bedford, Ohio where funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made in her memory to Hope United Methodist Church.
