Former long-term Macedonia resident, Rev. Richard (Dick) Seawright, passed away on January 22, 2023 at St. Marks Hospital, Millcreek, Utah. Dick had lived in Macedonia for 43 ½ years until relocating, at the age of 83, to the Salt Lake City / Park City, Utah area to be with his son, Robert (Bob) Seawright, also a former Macedonia resident. Dick was born on June 7, 1936 and was 86 years old.
Originally from the Dunkirk / Fredonia, NY area, Dick graduated from Houghton College in 1958. From there, he went on to The Biblical Seminary in New York (now the New York Theological Seminary), graduating in 1961. Over his 50 years of ministry, Dick served as Pastor for churches in Orange, MA, Rochester, NY, Northfield, OH, Wickliffe, OH and Macedonia, OH. Dick’s wife of 58 years, Katherine (Kay) Joan Seawright, also a graduate of Houghton (class of 1958), preceded him in death, passing away on Memorial Day, May 29, 2017 at 80 years old.
God incredibly blessed all who were touched by Dick’s endless love, warmth, care, compassion, empathy, deep humility, his ability to listen and his strong devotion to Jesus, his Lord and Savior since the age of 9 years old. Dick endlessly loved and served people and always shared and radiated the light and salt of God to all he came in contact with. Dick was blessed with an incredible voice and loved to sing God’s words as often as he could. He loved to teach God’s words to all who would listen and led dozens of small church groups of the decades.
Other interests included community service where he previously served on the board of the Nordonia Hills School District as well as the board of Macedonia, OH YMCA. After his retirement in 2009, Dick loved to volunteer for activities such as Sports Camp at his church, Cuyahoga Valley Church-Broadview Heights. He especially enjoyed reading to second graders and helping a second-grade teacher at Northfield Elementary – he said, “those kids brought more joy to my heart than they will ever know!!”
At 50 years old, Dick committed his life to working out and eating better (aerobics, personal training, boxing classes) and God blessed him, his family, his friends, his congregations and his community with a longer, better quality of life. He was daily spotted walking his 3 miles in the Indian Creeks neighborhood
off of North Bedford Road.
He loved working in his colorful flower filled yard, planting and pruning flowers and enjoying the peaceful, quiet backyard filled with chirping birds. He loved his family and friends, and he loved them well!! Dick and his son, Bob, loved to travel together and took many trips all over the western United States. Dick loved to hike with his son and they took many long, high-elevation hikes in God’s Creation in the west, in and around the Wasatch Mountains, the Uinta Mountains and the Park City, Utah area.
Some of Dick’s favorite places to travel to (and hike) were places like Bryce Canyon National Park (UT), Park City, UT, Sundance Ski Resort (UT), Grand Teton National Park, WY, Aspen, Breckenridge and Telluride, CO, Bend, OR and Lake Tahoe (CA, NV). Dick and Bob went to Costa Rica in 2018 and Dick shocked his son when he said, at 82 years old, “I think I’m going to do the Zipline today”, something Bob had not previously considered and was fearful of doing. Bob said, “If your 82 year old dad is going to do the Zipline, there was no way I was not going to join him. I would have never heard the end of it. We both cherished that shared and amazing and exhilarating adventure.”

For the last 1,191 days of his life (3 years, 3 months, 3 days), he lived with his son, Robert D. Seawright, in Millcreek / Park City, UT where they travelled the west and went on dozens of high elevation hikes in God’s amazing beauty. Both attended Mountain Life Church in Park, City, UT. Dick’s favorite season of the year was fall and he really loved the fall yellow and orange colors of the aspen trees so prominent in the west.
Dick is survived by his son, Bob, daughter Pam, three grandkids (Gregory, Christopher and Brittany) and one great-grandson, Cyrus.
For those unable to attend, there will be a remote Live Stream broadcast. That info will be in a follow up posting to come soon and will also be posted on Facebook.
