William Samuel Hinkle (88) of Macedonia, Ohio entered into eternal rest on June 9, 2019. Beloved husband of 64 years to Mary Jean (nee Wozniak), devoted father of Stephen (Gloria), William (Nancy), Mary Ann (Peter), Mark (Joan), Kathryn (Jimmy), Peter (Evelyn), Barbara (Joseph), and Julie (Camille), and dear brother to James (Geraldine), Richard (Anne), and Suzanne (Terry). Bill was cherished by his 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Son of the late Frank and Anna (Piona) Hinkle, Bill was born and raised in Kent, Ohio where he attended Kent Roosevelt High School and excelled in academics and athletics. This would set the foundation for the rest of his life – a life defined by love of family, faith, work and sports. Bill graduated from General Motors Institute with a degree in mechanical engineering and spent his entire career at General Motors in Cleveland. His mechanical prowess extended to his home, where he could usually be found working on home improvement or repair projects – often employing unique fixes using everyday items. As a founding member of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Macedonia, Bill actively participated in many aspects of the church. He was one of the first lay Eucharistic ministers in the Diocese, led the Catholic Charities annual drives for many years, and with Mary Jean, initiated and participated in the RCIA process at the parish. Prayerful and just, Bill was a man of few words who lived his faith by example. Strong Christian values guided his devotion to his family and parish community. Bill loved to be physically active – he was an avid bowler and golfer until very late in life, and played softball and basketball well into his 70s. He rooted hard for all the Cleveland sports teams and Notre Dame football, showing his dedication by never leaving a game early – even if the score was lopsided. This too was the way he lived his own life. Etched forever in our memory will be an image of Dad in his favorite chair, reading Scripture followed by the sports page while enjoying a cup of black coffee. Don’t worry Dad, we will all be keeping our noses clean and backing carefully out of the driveway.
