ODOT Plans Pedestrian Beacon at Bike and Hike Trail Crossing on State Route 82

Trail users who cross State Route 82 in Sagamore Hills could soon have a new signal to help them get across. The Ohio Department of Transportation plans to install a pedestrian hybrid beacon at the Summit MetroParks Bike and Hike Trail crossing. The agency is asking the public for feedback before work begins.

What is planned at the trail crossing

The beacon is one piece of ODOT’s 2027 Signal Project, which covers six locations in Summit and Portage counties. Crews will also replace signage and crosswalk pavement markings at the Sagamore Hills crossing.

ODOT says the project will not change traffic patterns or movements on State Route 82.

Other Summit County work

A second Summit County location is in Springfield Township. ODOT plans to upgrade the existing traffic signal at U.S. 224 and East Waterloo Road.

Work planned in Portage County

Three Portage County townships are part of the project. Here is what ODOT has planned:

  • Brimfield Township: upgrade the existing signal at State Route 43 and Old Forge Road
  • Ravenna Township: reconstruct and upgrade the overhead flashing control beacon at State Route 5 and westbound State Route 59
  • Ravenna Township: remove the overhead flashing control beacons at State Route 5 and Sandy Lake Road, and at State Route 5 and Lake Street

Existing intersection lighting and advance warning flashers will remain at the Sandy Lake Road and Lake Street intersections. ODOT will also install new dual oversized intersection warning signs on State Route 5.

What drivers can expect

Drivers may see short term lane closures or restrictions in marked work zones. Crews need them to complete overhead tasks safely. ODOT says the closures will be posted and scheduled in advance.

Access will be maintained to all adjacent properties and side streets. The agency does not expect substantial traffic disruptions.

Cost and schedule

ODOT estimates the total construction cost at about $895,000. Construction is set to begin and finish next summer.

How to share your comments

ODOT does not expect the project to have substantial impacts on environmental resources. The agency still wants to hear from residents. Topics can include how the work may affect neighbors and traffic.

Comments on the project, maintenance of traffic or environmental impacts must be submitted by Nov. 9 to Brian Peck, environmental specialist with ODOT District 4.
