Macedonia Police Blotter: Shoplifting Case Ends With Arrests After Foot Pursuit

Police were called to Burlington Coat Factory on East Aurora Road on Jan. 14 at approximately 11:39 a.m. for a reported theft in progress. Loss prevention staff at the store had recognized two individuals from a similar theft that occurred the day before on Jan. 13.

When officers arrived on scene, they observed the male and female suspects walking out of the store. Upon seeing police, both individuals began running toward State Route 82. Officers pursued the suspects across the parking lot. One officer reported parking at a nearby bank and continuing the foot pursuit on foot, giving verbal commands for the suspects to stop. The suspects continued running until they were detained near a local restaurant.

Police reported recovering merchandise valued at $343.88 connected to the incident, including miscellaneous items, a Steve Madden bag, and a DoorDash delivery bag. Officers also reported locating a vehicle with a Florida license plate in the parking lot that was registered to one of the suspects. The vehicle was towed and a search warrant was obtained. During the vehicle search, officers reported finding numerous brand-new colognes, perfumes, clothing, and shoes.

Both suspects were interviewed with a Spanish interpreter present after being read their Miranda rights. One suspect stated he was originally from Florida, and both indicated they had used a rideshare service to arrive at the store.

Charges filed through Stow Municipal Court included:

  • Theft (misdemeanor 1)
  • Obstructing official business (misdemeanor 2)
  • Possessing criminal tools (misdemeanor 1)

Burlington Coat Factory was listed as the complainant in the case. A Victims’ Rights form was filed.

Lost Property Report Filed for Missing Concealed Handgun Permit

On Jan. 15 at approximately 5:08 p.m., Macedonia police took an information report after a resident came to the station as a walk-in to document a missing concealed handgun permit. The resident explained that he was in the process of renewing his concealed handgun permit and needed to bring his old permit to the courthouse as part of the renewal application.

The resident told police he had searched two locations where the permit could have been—a moving box and a family member’s residence in Chardon—but was unable to locate it. The report was taken for documentation purposes to assist with the permit renewal process.

Knights Inn Domestic Call Results in Separation, No Charges

On Jan. 17 at approximately 11:10 a.m., Macedonia officers responded to a reported domestic violence incident at Knights Inn on East Highland Road. The call was placed by a female resident of the motel room.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the male party at the scene. He stated that he had not put his hands on the female or struck her in any manner. Officers directed both parties to remain separated to allow for individual interviews.

The female reported that she had been playing music on a Bluetooth speaker, which upset the male. According to her account, the male then threw the speaker, pushed her to the floor, pulled her hair, and choked her. Upon hearing the allegation of choking, officers immediately requested medical personnel to respond.

Officers conducted a visual examination of the female’s neck using a flashlight but reported observing no visible bruising, redness, or other signs of trauma. When paramedics arrived and conducted a physical examination of her neck and head area, they also noted no visible signs of injury or trauma. The female was offered medical treatment, which she declined.

Officers then spoke separately with the male outside the room. He continued to deny any physical contact or harmful touching. A visual examination of his hands revealed no visible trauma, swelling, redness, or other indications of a recent physical altercation.

The male described the incident as stemming from a verbal argument. He stated his perception that the female was “lazy” and did not want him to obtain employment. He further stated that the female becomes upset because he pays child support for children from a previous relationship rather than directing those funds toward her children.

After considering the totality of circumstances—including the absence of visible injury, conflicting statements, and lack of corroborating physical evidence—officers determined that the most appropriate course of action was to separate the parties for the evening to allow tempers to cool. The male agreed to this plan and arranged to stay with a friend in Akron. Officers provided him with a courtesy transport to a local retailer to facilitate the meetup with his friend. The male was advised that he would be permitted to return to the motel residence at a later time.
