Committee is tasked with the repeal of House Bill 6
COLUMBUS – State Representative Casey Weinstein (D-Hudson) today announced his appointment to the Select Committee on Energy Policy and Oversight. The Committee will hear legislation designed to repeal House Bill (HB) 6, the $2 billion corporate bailout tied to an ongoing FBI investigation into an alleged $60 million scheme to get the bill passed. Bipartisan legislation offering a clean repeal of HB 6 had previously languished in the Committee on Rules and Reference without any movement from the Majority Caucus for over a month before being referred to the newly formed Select Committee after House Democrats launched an effort to discharge it from Rules and Reference.
“House Bill 6 was bad from the beginning, and the corruption only makes it worse,” said Rep. Weinstein. “Hardworking Ohioans should not be subsiding a crooked policy that supports a chronically failing corporation.”
When the Ohio House returned to session on Tuesday, Sept. 1, Democrats readied to offer several amendments that would have repealed HB 6, but Speaker Bob Cupp (R-Lima) abruptly ended House session rather than hear the Democratic amendments. Former Speaker Larry Householder, who was present during the September 1 session and voting on legislation, has been arrested and indicted for his role in the alleged corruption scheme that led to HB 6’s passage.
“It is time for a new energy vision for Ohio, one that looks to the future instead of the past,” added Rep. Weinstein. “I am eager to begin the work of crafting that vision as a member of the Select Committee on Energy and Policy Oversight.”
