Department Details
The Sagamore Hills Police Department currently employs 14 full-time officers including the police chief, four part-time officers, and a school community officer paid by the Nordonia school system, with total expenditures of $2.4 million for 2024 according to a recent trustee report. Officer Dan DeCrane serves as the police representative to Rushwood Elementary school.
The department has been recognized for its effectiveness, with Sagamore Hills Township ranking as the second safest community in Ohio in a previous safety evaluation, joining other top-ranked areas including Chester Township, Montville Township, Broadview Heights and Olmsted Township.
Police Activity
In terms of service statistics, the investigation division responded to 292 calls for service in 2024 with only seven cases remaining open. The department issued 348 traffic citations and 1,402 written warnings for traffic/equipment violations last year.
Recent Funding
The township has received some additional support for the police department, including a county grant of $42,000 from Summit County Sheriff Kandy Fatheree for a new police cruiser, with the township approving an additional $25,000 to outfit the vehicle.
Police Chief David Hayes has been with Sagamore Hills since 2007, and the department has maintained careful budget management over the years.
Upcoming Levy Vote
The May 6th election will determine whether the replacement levy passes, which would restore the original collection rate to ensure continued high-quality police services for Sagamore Hills Township residents.
