SEASON RECAP: Nordonia High School Girls Golf Team’s 2023 Season Highlights

The Nordonia High School Girls Golf team had an exceptional 2023 season, displaying their impressive skills in various tournaments and matches. The team consisted of six talented players: junior Julia Gulla, senior Brooke Barnes, sophomores Natalie Barnes and Carley Sutton, along with sophomore Maddie Eisner and freshman Lauren Torain. Guiding them throughout the season was their dedicated coach, Greg Harris.

The season kicked off with a bang at the Lady Rider Golf Invitational on August 5th, where they secured a second-place finish with a score of 314. Julia Gulla led the charge with a score of 74, closely followed by Brooke Barnes with a solid 77.

Over the course of the season, the team competed in four Suburban League tournaments, taking on fierce rivals like Hudson and Stow-Munroe Falls. In the first tournament at Old Avalon Golf Course on August 10th, they clinched a respectable third place with a score of 324. Julia Gulla was the star, earning the title of medalist with an impressive 67, and Brooke Barnes wasn’t far behind with a solid 78.

Their journey continued with a strong second-place finish in the second Suburban League tournament at Pleasant Valley Golf Course on August 17th, scoring 347. Brooke Barnes stood out with a score of 78, while Julia Gulla posted a commendable 79.

The team kept their momentum in the third Suburban League tournament at Fox Den Golf Course on September 9th, with a score of 332. Julia Gulla claimed the medal title for the third time with a fantastic 73, while Brooke Barnes continued to impress with a 75.

The fourth and final Suburban League tournament at Brookledge Golf Course on October 5th saw the team finish third with a score of 352. Julia Gulla showcased her skills with a score of 78, and Brooke Barnes, who earned 1st team All League honors, carded an 82. Julia Gulla’s remarkable performance tied her with Serena Wu of Solon and Gabrielle Berlingeri of Stow for the tournament’s medalist title, and she was recognized as the National Conference Player of the Year.

Throughout the season, the team also participated in invitationals like the Walsh Jesuit Invitational, where they scored 369, and the Blue Streak Invitational, where they secured 15th place with a score of 371. They engaged in thrilling dual matches against schools like Brunswick, Theodore Roosevelt, Hudson, and Stow-Munroe Falls, with their last match against Stow-Munroe Falls on September 28th, resulting in a loss of 151–171.

The team’s journey continued as they finished fourth at the OHSAA Sectional Tournament, earning a ticket to the district tournament. However, the state tournament proved elusive, as they secured 11th place at the Northeast Ohio District Athletic Association at Brookledge Golf Course on October 10th. The team faced a challenging course and a strong field of competitors, posting a score of 368, with junior Julia Gulla leading the way with an individual total score of 79.
