On Saturday, April 23, 2022, at approximately 2:20 a.m., a Summit County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant responded to an occupied disabled vehicle on Interstate 77 in Coventry Township. The disabled vehicle was stopped in the right lane of travel of Interstate 77 within the construction zone. On that section of roadway, there is no area to pull off of the road. While out of the patrol vehicle, the sergeant observed a vehicle approaching her vehicle in the lane adjacent to her vehicle at a high rate of speed. The vehicle failed to move to the lane furthest from the patrol vehicle as required by the Ohio Revised Code. Believing she was about to be struck, the sergeant took evasive action and jumped between the disabled vehicle and her patrol vehicle. The sergeant injured her ankle while avoiding the vehicle. No description of the vehicle could be obtained. The sergeant was transported by Coventry Fire to Summa Health System for treatment.
The vehicle that failed to change lanes continued to travel south on Interstate 77. The incident remains under investigation by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. If you have information reference the vehicle that failed to move over, please contact the Summit County Sheriff’s Office Patrol at 330 643-2147.
