Special Obituary: SFC Peter William Simon, 8th Calvary Regiment, G CO., 2nd BN

SFC Peter William Simon, 8th Calvary Regiment, G CO., 2nd BN., United States Army, was killed while engaging enemy forces in South Korea on Sept. 3, 1950. Sgt. Simon’s unidentified body was recovered in May 1951 and buried next to other unknown soldiers killed during the Korean War in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu, Hawaii. Sgt. Simon also served valiantly in World War II, Participating in the African, European and Middle Eastern Campaigns. During his service he was awarded the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the American Campaign Medal, the European, African and Middle Eastern Campaign Medals, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army Occupation Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Republic of Korea War Service Medal, the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Good Conduct Medal.

He was the beloved son of the late John and Elizabeth Simon and the loving brother of six siblings. Sgt. Simon left behind many family members who never gave up hope that he would return home. In January 2018, while trying to identify another unknown Korean War casualty, the POW/MIA Accounting Agency Forensic Team positively identified Sgt. Simon’s remains. Sgt. Simon’s family is eternally grateful to the U.S. Army, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency and all those whose diligence to their mission brought our hero home.

Sgt. Simon will return home March 28, 2018 and be laid to rest surrounded by his family on March 31, at All-Saints Cemetery in Northfield, Ohio, at 12 noon. Those who wish to pay their respects can do so on March 30, 2018 from 4 to 8 P.M. and on March 31, 2018 at 11 A.M. (prior to the procession to All-Saints) at Ferfolia Funeral Home, 356 W. Aurora Rd.
