Summit County Celebrates Small Business Saturday, Encourages Residents To Shop Local

SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—In recognition of Summit County’s vibrant small business community, County Executive Ilene Shapiro and County Council passed legislation declaring November 26 “Small Business Saturday.” During Small Business Saturday, residents are encouraged to shop local and shop small, especially during the holidays, to support their community.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, Small Business Saturday reported an estimated $23.3 billion in spending in 2021, an increase of $3.5 billion over 2020. While this is encouraging news, the COVID-19 pandemic, strained supply-chains, and economic uncertainty have hit businesses hard, especially those that balance the books month-to-month. While Summit County distributed $12.8 million in grants to over 3,000 small businesses in 2020, residents are encouraged to continue to shop local and shop small to support their community.

“Small businesses are embedded in the fabric of our community—they are gathering places where people meet to share a meal, art studios where talent is nurtured, and manufacturers crafting innovative products,” said County Executive Shapiro, “The last few years have been tough, but as we emerge from these uncertain times, we cannot forget the importance of local, small businesses. Shopping small boosts our economy and anchors jobs right here in Summit County.”

According to Entry Point, a midwestern research firm, small businesses are much more likely to support local causes, to create good, local jobs, and to keep their revenue within the community. As residents begin their holiday shopping, dining, and fun, check out your local Chamber of Commerce for information on businesses that need your support. Keep an eye on the Summit County Executive’s social media for a spotlight of these businesses.
