Summit County Finance Team Wins Prestigious National Award

GFOA recognizes department’s outstanding budget presentation for consecutive year

The Summit County Finance and Budget Department has been honored with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association, marking another year of national recognition for the county’s financial excellence.

The award program, which began in 1984, recognizes state and local governments that create superior budget documents. The GFOA, a nonprofit organization serving over 20,000 finance professionals throughout the United States and Canada, requires budgets to demonstrate proficiency across four critical categories: policy documentation, financial planning, operational guidance, and public communication.

Each submission undergoes rigorous evaluation by three independent judges who must rate all four areas as proficient before awarding recognition.

County Executive Ilene Shapiro credited the achievement to her Finance and Budget team’s unwavering dedication, particularly noting their performance during current economic challenges. Director Phil Montgomery said the honor validates the department’s ongoing commitment to fiscal responsibility and government transparency.

This continued recognition underscores Summit County’s dedication to maintaining strong financial practices while keeping budget information clear and accessible for both community members and local leaders.
