Summit County Sheriff’s Office to receive largest portion of Violent Crime Reduction Grant

COLUMBUS – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced today the recipients of more than $3.7 million in grant money to local law enforcement agencies to combat violent crime in their communities.

The governor’s announcement contained 21 police departments and sheriff’s offices throughout the state, with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office topping the award list at $421,241.

“This money will be instrumental in our ongoing efforts and planned initiatives to fight violent crime throughout our county, and it will help make our streets safer for those in law enforcement,” said Sheriff Fatheree. “I appreciate the state’s support in helping us to ensure that Summit County remains a safe place to live, work, and raise a family.”

The Ohio General Assembly and Governor created the Ohio Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program last year to provide additional resources to local law enforcement to tackle the recent uptick in violent crime throughout the state. The initial $8 million in state funds received a significant boost from the federal government’s 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, increasing the total funds available to $58 million to be dolled out over the coming months.

“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to fighting crime,” said Governor DeWine in his release. “I am dedicated to helping our local agencies prevent violence using the methods they know will make the most difference in their local neighborhoods.”
