Summit County Executive Shapiro and Summit County Council passed legislation recognizing July 27th as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day in Summit County. In honor of this recognition, Executive Shapiro led a July 27th lunchtime walk of over 120 County employees throughout downtown Akron to support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Multiple sclerosis affects more than 2.5 million people worldwide and approximately 400,000 in the United States. A disease with an unknown cause and no cure, MS awareness is vital in supporting affected individuals and their families, and working toward medical breakthroughs.
“We hope to one day see a cure for multiple sclerosis and discover a greater understanding of what causes it,” said Executive Shapiro. “Until that day is realized, we will work to raise awareness and support family members, friends and members of our community who live with MS. I am so proud of the participation we had today at our walk in support of this fantastic cause.”
“Summit County is proud to recognize July 27th as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day” said County Council President John Schmidt. “We had a wonderful turnout of individuals participating in the MS walk which will support awareness and research for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.”
Participating walkers were sponsored by friends and co-workers in an effort to raise funds to support the MS Society. Nearly $3200 was raised and presented to an MS Society Official on behalf of the employees of Summit County.
In addition to leading the walk, Executive Shapiro is co-chairing the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Ohio Buckeye Chapter’s 10th Annual Dinner of Champions on August 24, 2017 to support greater awareness and progress in finding a cure.
