Summit County Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise has announced that real estate tax relief is available to residents whose properties were damaged in the recent storm. Property owners can file an Application for Valuation Deduction for Destroyed or Damaged Property (Form DTE 26) to receive tax relief.
“The Fiscal Office is taking the necessary steps to provide property owners with the ability to file an Application for Valuation Deduction for Destroyed or Damaged Property,” said Scalise, noting the importance of filing as soon as possible.
Residents have until December 31, 2025, to submit applications, but early filing is recommended as any deduction will affect tax bills mailed in January 2026. The reduction will equal 75% of the value of the destroyed portion since the damage occurred in April.
Form DTE 26 can be downloaded from the county website at http://fiscaloffice.summitoh.net by clicking the “Damaged Property” link under the Real Estate and Appraisal column. Completed forms should be mailed to the Summit County Fiscal Office at 175 S. Main Street, Room 304, Akron, OH 44308. Those without computer access can request a form by calling (330) 643-2704.
Once applications are filed, the Appraisal Department will conduct inspections to determine damage amounts. Damage to trees, landscaping, fencing, and personal items is excluded on residential properties. The Fiscal Office will track repairs based on applications and building permits from affected townships and cities.
