Discover the rich history of the Tudor estate at Longwood Park as the community celebrates a century of local heritage.
MACEDONIA, Ohio – Longwood Manor is the historic former home of the first Mayor of Macedonia, Colonel William Frew Long. This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Longwood Manor, a milestone being celebrated by the Longwood Manor Historical Society through a series of public events and restoration updates. Originally built in 1924 and reconstructed in 1926, the Manor is now on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as a centerpiece for the Macedonia community.
Maybe you’ve noticed a Tudor-style building on the Longwood Park property near the Rec Center not far from the Twinsburg border. This is Longwood Manor, former home of the first Mayor of Macedonia, Colonel William Frew Long. Mayor Long was identified as “Colonel Long” during his life in Macedonia. This reflected his military status after serving in both World Wars.
Colonel Long was a Cleveland businessman. He purchased land in Macedonia in 1924 and built a summer cottage. The original structure was destroyed in a fire and rebuilt in 1926. When Colonel Long retired, he had the Tudor addition built in the late 1940s moving there with wife Isabel making it their permanent home.
Development of the Macedonia Estate
The property eventually established itself as a working farm. Additional land was acquired on both sides of State Route 82 from just before the Twinsburg line to Shepard Road, amassing over 360 acres.
- The barns on the property were added in the late 1920s.
- Colonel Long became involved in Macedonia politics, eventually being elected the first Mayor of Macedonia in 1962.
- He remained Mayor until 1975, at 96 years old being the oldest sitting Mayor in the United States.
- He was responsible for bringing water service to Macedonia from Cleveland, establishing the Fire Department, upgrading the Village of Macedonia to City status, and developing home mail delivery.
Preservation and the 100th Anniversary of Longwood Manor
Colonel Long’s wife passed away in 1956. His only son was living in Florida. Subsequently at his passing in 1984 his will stipulated that all the property, including the Manor house and barns, was to be turned over to the City of Macedonia for the use and enjoyment of the residents of Macedonia.
Over the years the Manor house was used for City activities. When it was closed down it fell into disrepair and was slated for demolition. Support came from City officials and volunteers to save the building. Longwood Manor Historical Society was established to support restoration of Longwood Manor.
This year is the 100th Anniversary of Longwood Manor, and the Society will hold a year-long celebration. The first floor is open now for public viewing while work continues on the second and third floors which will be open to the public later this year. Longwood Manor is on the National Register of Historic Places.
