Over the weekend the Nordonia boys and girls swim teams ended their regular season with wins over Revere, Brecksville, and Aurora High Schools. This gives the girls team an overall record of 8 and 3 and the boys an overall record of 9 and 2. Both teams locked up second place in the very strong National Conference of the Suburban League.
“I cannot say how pleased I am with how the season has progressed”, Coach Yorkievitz said, adding that “this is the highest we have ever finished in the conference and to have that kind of record against the quality of opponents in the Suburban League is something all of these kids should be extremely proud of”.
This was also the last weekend of regular season meets for an extremely large and dedicated group of seniors who came on board as Freshman the same year Coach Yorkievitz entered his first year with the Knights. Those athletes for the girl’s team are Cammie Becker, Emma Dutter, Bridget Larsen, Emma McCabe, Ella Pendleton, Grace Magistrelli, and Alex Stalzer in swimming, Loris Jensen and Emily Schonauer in diving. For the boys Michael Gruber and Mason Revelle for Swimming and Colton Frances who had double duty competing as both a swimmer and a diver.
According to Coach Yorkievitz, “when we began this Journey four years ago we had a very small number of returning swimmers and we were coming off a number of seasons where the Knights were consistently finishing in the basement of the Suburban League. This group of Freshman bought in to the hard work and dedication that was going to be required to turn the program around, they also went out and helped recruit potential swimmers and divers to help build the program. They truly are a special class and I am most thankful that they were able to be a part of this special season.”
*The regular season comes to an end but the team is getting ready for the post-season with four upcoming meets:
- The Junior Varsity Championships at Canton McKinley High School on February 4th.
- The Sectional meet at Akron University on February 11th.
- The District meet at Cleveland State University on February 18th.
- The State Championships at Canton McKinley High School on February 23rd and 24th.
