THE MATHER TRAGEDY
It is said that time is the greatest healer for those who experience tragedy in their lives. A week has already gone by since the explosion and fire that took the lives of the Mather family. The healing process has now begun. Our community came together from the night of the fire to the memorial vigil held last Friday night. We were all reminded just how fragile and precious life is and how fast it can be taken. Hopefully we will all come away from this by getting to know our neighbors better by forming closer and lasting friendships.
I should also mention that our Fire District and the numerous other area Fire Departments, under the command of Chief Frank Risko, did an excellent job in fighting the fire and saving the neighboring homes from damage. Additionally, Chief Risko, the State Fire Marshal’s office and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office worked together to preserve evidence and conducted a thorough investigation that led to the cause of the explosion and fire, which was determined to be arson. A final report on the entire matter will be coming soon.
JOHN ROMANIK APPOINTED AS NEW TRUSTEE
On Monday, January 11th, a special Trustees meeting was conducted. The purpose was to conduct an executive session to try to agree on the appointment of a new Trustee to fill the unexpired term of Brent Sommer who retired and moved to Florida. Rich Reville and I asked John Romanik and Russ Mazzola to attend because both of them were in the final ‘running’ for the position. As a result of that meeting and through an amicable agreement with all parties, John Romanik was chosen to be our new Trustee.
This was a very difficult decision to make due to the 11 people who submitted resumes’ for our consideration. ALL 11 were very qualified and that’s what made the decision so difficult but we finally agreed on John. John is a longtime resident and has served on the BZA (Board of Zoning Appeals) for almost ten years. Congratulations to John Romanik and a big thank you to Russ Mazzola and to the rest of those who expressed their interest by applying for the position. It should be mentioned that some of those who applied are being appointed to openings on some of our boards!
THIS NEWSLETTER FINALLY ENTERS THE 21ST CENTURY!
During the past six months or so I’ve published very few newsletters due to time restrictions but mainly due to technical problems. Many might find it hard to believe but until two weeks ago I was still on DIAL UP Internet service with AOL! Two weeks ago I finally entered into the 21st century and now have broadband service. I’m still having some problems working through the new ‘stuff’ but I am getting a better handle on it every day. One of my problems involve transferring the newsletter template onto the email format. Therefore, that is the reason that this is being sent as a word document attachment. I hope to have this fixed for future newsletters. Also, some future newsletters might be sent by my TrusteeBuescher@twc.com email address. Please do NOT use this address until I advise that it has been changed permanently.
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q >>> – Are there anymore updates on the Meijer store proposed for the Spitzer property?
A >>> – Not at this time other than the Summit County Planning Commission is currently reevaluating its original decision to recommend against the proposal.
Q >>> – I recently had surgery on my foot and cannot drive. I am a senior and live by myself and need to go for therapy. I heard that there is a service that can provide transportation. Do you have any information on this service?
A >>> – METRO RTA has a service called SCAT. It picks up qualified people at their home and for $2 takes them to the doctor. The ride back is also $2. The contact number is 330.762.0314 and here is the web site: http://www.akronmetro.org/metro-scat.aspx
Q >>> – When will the Mather house be demolished?
A >>> – We are not sure. The State Fire Marshal released it to the insurance company so the decision will, for the time being, be up to them and the bank holding the mortgage. There is also personal property to be retrieved by family relatives so this might take a little more time before demolition can take place but we will stay on top of it.
