MATHER HOME TRAGEDY UPDATE

Rumors have been circulating about the January 11th house explosion and fire on Skyhaven that killed four members of the Mather family.  The one major rumor involved the cause of death of the mother and two daughters.  The Sheriff’s Office reported at our Trustees meeting last night that rumors of the family being shot prior to the explosion and fire are FALSE.  There was no forensic evidence indicating gunshots and no guns were found in the home.  We are still waiting for a report on the actual cause of death.

The house itself has officially been condemned and we are working with all involved parties to get the ruins of the house demolished as soon as possible.

Attorney General DeWine Warns of Five Top Job Scams

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today warned about five of the most common scams targeting people looking for jobs or extra income.

In 2015, the Ohio Attorney General’s Office received more than 150 complaints involving work-at-home or business opportunities, many of which involved potential scams.

Some of the most commonly reported scams include:

Work-from-home office job. A company hires the applicant to work from home shipping packages, processing payments, completing surveys, or entering data, but the applicant is asked to provide an upfront payment to set up a home office or to purchase software, computers, or other supplies. The job is phony and the applicant will lose any money sent.

Mystery shopper. An applicant is selected for a “secret shopper” job. The first assignment is to deposit a check and then wire-transfer a portion of the funds to someone else using the wire-transfer service at a local retail store. In reality, the check the applicant has received is no good, and any money the person sends will be lost.

Running a web-based business. In exchange for an upfront fee from the applicant, a company promises to set up a web-based business that will generate income through advertising revenue or products sold online by other businesses. The claims are false and no money will be generated for the applicant.

Nanny/caregiver scam. Caregivers go online looking for work opportunities posted on caregiver or classified websites. They find a job and communicate via email or text message with the “client,” who sends a check and asks the caregiver to deposit it, and then send some of the money to a landlord or to purchase supplies related to the position. Despite the “client’s” claims, it’s all a scam.

‘Wrap your car in an advertisement.’ A company claims an applicant can make hundreds of dollars per week by wrapping his or her vehicle in an advertisement for an energy drink or other product. The applicant is told to provide payment before the ad can be placed on the vehicle. In truth it’s a scam.

“Regardless of the pitch, if you’re asked to send money as part of a job you found online, be very careful,” Attorney General DeWine said. “Con artists are good at what they do, and some pretend to work for legitimate companies in order to make their scams seem real. Before providing any money or personal information, conduct your own independent research. If you suspect a scam, contact my office.”

Signs of a job scam include:

–Interviews conducted only online or via instant messenger.
–Employers who send a check before the work has started.
–Upfront payments required from the applicant for a home office or supplies.
–Recruiters who claim to work for a large company but use a third-party email account, instead of a company email address.
–Employers who ask an applicant to send money via wire transfer or prepaid card.
–Offers that seem too good to be true.

Consumers can report potential scams to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at www.OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov or 800-282-0515.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q >>> – So let me get this straight. Brent [Sommer] decided in May of 2015 that he was going to retire and move to Florida in December of 2015. He tells you and John Romanik about this in May, and that he wants John to replace him when he resigns, and still runs for re-election in the fall of 2015. Then advises you in mid-December 2015 of the fact that he was resigning effective December 31, 2015.    My question is why the Heck he bothered to run. He should have just retired at the end of his term. Then the RESIDENTS, of this town could have made the decision as to his replacement. My wife and I liked him, but the way he decided to end his time with the Township was just wrong. The fact that you knew about this in May and allowed him to do this makes me disappointed in you also.
A >>> – Hold on there my friend, you have your facts all wrong!  Brent Sommer ran (along with me) for reelection in 2013, NOT 2015.  Rich Reville was the only one to run last year and he was unopposed.  Brent’s retirement plans did not come into play until he was halfway through his current four-year term (2014 to 2018), which was a complete surprise to all of us.  Therefore, by law, the two remaining Trustees (Rich and me) had to appoint a replacement to fill Brent’s remaining two years.

Q >>> – Can something be done about the potholes on Olde Eight Rd.? One near Leonard, one by the old bank, one near Northfield Elementary! These are so deep! Please try to help! Thanks
A >>> – Olde Eight is a county road, which means that the county and not the Township is responsible for all maintenance.  At last night’s Trustees meeting I asked Rob from the County Engineer’s Office about this and he reported that all of Olde Eight north of Rt. 82 will be repaved this summer.

Q >>> – I noticed at the end of your newsletters that your position on the trustees board occasionally changes.  One time it’s chair, then it’s vice chair and then it’s trustee.  I’m just wondering how this is determined?
A >>> – We rotate positions every year in January.  The chair becomes a non-titled trustee, the vice-chair becomes chair and the trustee becomes vice-chair.  This allows all three Trustees to participate in all positions on the Board.  This is also the same for the Zoning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals members.  I should also add that this also applies to the six Board members of the Fire District.

Q >>> – Where do you stand on the Meijer store proposal?
A >>> – Just like any major issue that presents itself, I keep an open mind until I have all of the facts and hear from YOU the residents.  On December 9, 2015, the Zoning Commission held a public hearing on this issue.  Over 100 people attended and when specifically asked, none were in favor of the proposal.  Then, on December 17th, the County Planning Commission recommended a “Disapproval” based primarily on environmental issues.  Recently we learned that the County Commission changed its mind and I have heard from just a few residents who are in favor of the plans.  Keep in mind that the County Planning Commission and our Zoning Commission’s recommendations are NON-BINDING and the Board of Trustees will make the final decision after our own public hearing on the matter.  Whether you are for or against this proposal, I highly encourage everyone to attend any future meetings on the matter AND to let me know your opinions.  Most of you know how important your input is to me when decision time comes!

Q >>> – What number can I call to get a rust testing kit?
A >>> – I have never heard of a “rust testing kit.”  Rust is usually seen with the naked eye making a testing kit irrelevant.  What and where do you want to test for rust?  Maybe I am missing something here so give me a little more information on your concern.

Paul, I would just like to say I have shopped in Meijer stores many times in Mich. when I visit my sister. They are very nice stores.   My girls love to shop there. It is very clean, and has very nice Merchandise. I really believe it wouldn’t hurt to have a nice grocery store other than the few we have. Their prices are very reasonable too. I really hope this can happen.

Thanks for your help with the trash problem on Olde 8 Rd.  It is looking much better.

With all due respect to the gentleman who said he was excited about Meijers moving into the area. I would like to know how he would feel having one built behind his house. I don’t see the need for ANOTHER grocery store in the area. We have Giant Eagle, Aldi’s, Super Wal-Mart, Marcs and to some extent Target. I do not want, nor do I see the need for ANOTHER grocery store. I hope you and your fellow Trustees see the lack of NEED for ANOTHER grocery store and will vote against it. I find it odd that Summit County Planning Comm. is re-evaluating their position. Please take in account that none of my neighbors want this to go forth and I can only foresee the traffic problems (which are many) for those of us living on Beechwood and Cherry lane to increase dramatically. Please address in your newsletter your views. Tell us the upside to this going forward because for me, I cannot see it.

A brief reminder for those who don’t know what happened, quietly, on January 1, 2016:

* Medicare tax went from 1.45% to 2.35%
* Top Income tax bracket went from 35% to 39.6%
* Top Income payroll tax went from 37.4% to 52.2%
* Capital Gains tax went from 15% to 28%
* Dividend tax went from 15% to 39.6%
* Estate tax went from 0% to 55%
* A 3.5% Real Estate transaction tax was added.

Remember this:  These taxes were ALL passed solely with Democrat votes. Not a single Republican voted for these new taxes. These taxes were all passed in the UN-Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.  Now look at your increased property tax bills and see how much is going for each itemized tax.  When is this insanity going to stop?
