This Too Shall Pass – June 8

It appears, my promise that “This Too Shall Pass” has experienced a slight set back, with all the demonstrations across the nation over the George Floyd event, as thousands of folks came out in protest and many totally ignoring the social distancing guidelines.  But perhaps the effects may not be as bad, as most were seen, wearing masks and for a good cause.

But before I begin, I want to first establish the fact that I don’t want this column to be political.  I only wish to express my personal view of what I see and observe about what is happening in our country.  I just submitted an Op-Ed (Opinion editorial} to the NY Times.  Title of my submittal was “America: Broke, Broken or Both”.  I don’t know if the Times will print my submittal but, bottom-line, I wanted to express my personal observation of how I see America. 

I trust, most of the readers of Nordonia Hills News are just regular, common folks, Americans who just enjoy their families, go to church on Sundays, go to work and enjoy the freedoms that our founding fathers captured in our declaration of Independents and our Constitution.  My Op-Ed clearly stated this nation is BROKEN.  Again, without being political, I only suggest that you ask yourselves, what does that word, BROKEN means to you.  To me, it means something that isn’t working as it was originally design, created and intended to work.  The preamble to our Constitution states we are a union of people dedicated to  “Form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity”.  If you look at our country today, you have to reach the conclusion, we are nothing like the nation described in the opening statement of our Constitution.   

On the other hand, I am pleased to see the nation, coming together to voice their opinions on how they see our nation over the recent death of George Floyd.  I was especially proud to learn that the looting and violence we witnessed early on have been replaced with peaceful demonstrations and lawful obedience.  

So I do think things are slowly moving toward a new normal, stores and businesses slowly opening, the stock market rising and the unemployment numbers beginning to turn around, but we must still maintain our vigilance and not succumb to a lull that all is well.  Our state, our county and our cities are fortunate that we have leaders, who have taken their oath of office seriously and are acting diligently to protect their constituents.  Let’s continue to pray for other less fortunate Americans and hope that goodness and justice will ultimately prevail.
