Twinsburg Council Awards Eagle Scout, Approves Multiple Emergency Resolutions

Twinsburg recognizes local scout’s achievement while addressing tax incentive programs

Twinsburg City Council honored a local Eagle Scout and swiftly approved multiple emergency resolutions during their July 8 meeting at City Hall. The council unanimously passed several measures related to tax incentive programs and municipal operations.

GOVERNMENT

Eagle Scout Recognition – Council presented a proclamation to Siyona Vora, who earned Eagle Scout rank on September 10, 2024, as a member of Troop 500G in Solon. Her Eagle Scout project involved building a flag storage system for the Rotary flag program, replacing an unsafe bucket storage method with an organized wall system featuring individual compartments.

Emergency Resolutions Approved – Council passed five emergency resolutions to meet upcoming deadlines, including continuation of Community Reinvestment Area agreements, Twinsburg Occupancy Program incentives, and amendments to agreements with Siffron. The measures required suspension of the three-reading rule to expedite approval.

Service Department Contract – A resolution authorizing Mayor Sam Scaffide to contract with R.E. Warner for professional services on a new service garage complex passed unanimously.

Infrastructure Funding – Council approved applying for federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality funds through the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study for traffic signal upgrades, with an application deadline of July 18.

PUBLIC SAFETY

Bank Robbery Arrest – Mayor Scaffide highlighted recent police work involving a Fifth Third Bank robbery. Officers apprehended a suspect after a vehicle pursuit that ended with deployment of stop sticks by Solon Police. The suspect faced charges including breaking and entering, theft, fleeing and eluding, and had an out-of-state warrant for similar offenses.

Safety Committee Update – Councilman Greg Bellan reported the safety committee meeting was cancelled due to lack of agenda items. Mayor Scaffide provided updates on street parking changes and associated signage.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Summer Programming – Rock the Park continues with a Bon Jovi tribute band scheduled for July 11. The summer concert series concludes August 16 with a community back-to-school block party from 5-7 p.m., followed by a free concert featuring Cocktail Johnny. Tickets are required but free of charge.

Diversity Celebration – The JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion) committee will host Family Diversity Day on July 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Glen Chamberlain Park. The committee seeks two new members.

Rotary Activities – A kayak trip down Tinker Creek is scheduled for July 20, with $15 tickets including refreshments. The event supports Rotary’s Shop with the Cop Christmas program, which receives donations through Dairy Queen’s round-up campaign throughout July.

Memorial Recognition – The police department will observe the 17th anniversary of Officer Josh Miktarian’s end of watch with a silent moment at 11 a.m. Friday at the monument at Ravenna and Darrow roads, followed by a scholarship golf outing at Glen Eagles.

Wedding Anniversary – Mayor Scaffide announced a couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with a private proclamation ceremony in council chambers on June 25.

MUNICIPAL OPERATIONS

Staff Recruitment – HR Director Tammy Kalail reported active hiring for firefighter and dispatcher positions through National Testing Network. The department has 18 fire test takers and six dispatcher test takers, with 48 dispatch applications received.

Architectural Review – Seven cases were approved at the July 3 Architectural Review Board meeting, including signage for Carol Construction Supply, Faithful Companion Pet Crematory, and Citizens Bank. A garage addition on Sharon Court and storage facility preliminary approval for Oldmill Road were also approved.

Liquor Permits – Council approved two liquor permit transfers: from Mac’s Convenience Stores LLC to MM CS Services LLC on East Aurora Road, and from Suner and Soal Inc. to A-9224 LLC doing business as Dave’s Beverage on Darrow Road.

Summer Recess – Council will take summer recess until August 26. Finance committee meetings are scheduled for August 26 and September 2.

COMMUNITY NOTES

Twins Days Milestone – The 50th anniversary of Twins Days festival will occur the first weekend in August, celebrating five decades of the unique celebration.

New Business – Ebony’s Ice Cream opened at 9981 Vail Drive, relocating from Northfield to establish roots in Twinsburg.

Youth Visitors – Two Boy Scouts from Troop 213 attended the meeting as part of their citizenship requirements.

50th Anniversary Recognition – Councilman Post reminded residents to keep the Miktarian family in their thoughts and prayers on Friday, July 11.
