The Twinsburg Architectural Review Board met on Tuesday to address three property improvement cases, including a homeowner’s nightmare scenario with an abandoned roofing project and a straightforward garage addition request.
Leonard Williams appeared before the board regarding his home at 2619 East Aurora Road, explaining that a contractor had installed a black metal roof without pulling required permits, then disappeared after completing only 30-40% of the work. “The contractor didn’t pull the permits. The contractor didn’t do anything that they were supposed to do,” Williams told the board. “We didn’t know about it. It’s a huge lawsuit.”
Williams was forced to hire four different roofers to complete the job, which ultimately cost him approximately $35,000. He is now pursuing legal action against the manufacturer and roofing contractors involved.
The building commissioner pledged to prevent the contractor from working in Twinsburg again, stating, “I will go as far as to call that roofing manufacturing company and let them know as the building commissioner for the city of Twinsburg that the contractor they recommend is not welcome to do work in our city.”
In a less contentious case, James Shafer received unanimous approval for a 15×15 garage addition at 9790 East Idlewood Drive. Shafer, a carpenter since age 18, plans to build the addition himself, matching the existing home’s siding, trim, shingles and roof. Due to an oddly shaped lot, Shafer will still need to obtain a building permit and appear before the Board of Zoning Appeals.
The board also approved a siding profile change from horizontal to vertical board and batten for a detached garage at 1640 Jennifer Drive, submitted by Jeff Taylor, conditioned upon the homeowner obtaining HOA approval.
