Twinsburg City School District’s Board of Education tackled personnel matters and strategic planning during their regular meeting Thursday evening, with board members approving a controversial settlement agreement and reviewing the district’s future direction.
The meeting, held at Twinsburg High School and livestreamed online, saw the five-member board address multiple staffing changes and policy decisions affecting the district’s approximately 4,000 students.
Assistant Principal Settlement Reached
In one of the evening’s most significant actions, board members voted to approve a settlement agreement allowing Scott Astey to return to his role as Assistant Principal at Wilcox Primary School. The agreement, which was presented to the board under separate cover, establishes specific terms and conditions for Astey’s reinstatement to the position.
Board President Rhonda Crawford and fellow members Tina Davis, Beth Egan, Maria Hamilton and Leah Travis considered the matter during the meeting’s action items portion.
Staffing Shake-Up Continues
The district approved numerous personnel changes, including a significant three-year contract extension for Jillian Carter as Assistant Principal at Twinsburg High School. Carter’s renewed contract runs through July 2029 and includes compensation matching the district’s administrative salary schedule.
Several teaching positions also saw changes, with the board approving multiple one-year limited contracts to replace departing staff. Notably, teachers Kim Fink and Marcy Richards are retiring, while others have transferred to different assignments within the district.
The resignation list included MoNique Kirkland, who served three years as a teacher at Wilcox Primary, and Paul Zeller, the Head Custodian at Wilcox, who is retiring after four years of service.
Strategic Vision Takes Shape
District officials presented updates on their strategic planning efforts, including fourth-quarter progress reports for the current school year and an overview of the 2025-2030 strategic plan.
Dr. Lisa Riegel from Educational Partnerships Institute, LLC, served as a consultant on the strategic planning process. Riegel specializes in helping school districts improve student performance through enhanced communication, parent engagement, and collaborative leadership development.
The strategic planning presentation highlighted the district’s focus on transitioning from compliance-based operations to collaborative reform initiatives.
Budget and Operations
Board members approved routine financial matters, including April expenditures and necessary adjustments for fiscal year closing. They also authorized the treasurer to make fund transfers and advances as needed to complete the fiscal year, pending future board approval.
In transportation matters, the board determined it was impractical to provide transportation for one student attending St. Joan of Arc School, approving a payment of $583.86 to cover alternative arrangements.
Regional Collaboration
The board endorsed the Summit County Interagency Agreement for the upcoming school year, continuing the district’s participation in a multi-agency collaboration serving young children with disabilities. The agreement involves coordination between school districts, Head Start programs, and early intervention services across Summit County.
Union Agreements Approved
Two memorandums of understanding with the Twinsburg Education Association received approval, covering supplemental contracts for sports announcers and the Blue Diamonds performance group for the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 school years.
Student Opportunities
Board members supported student athletic achievement by approving an overnight trip for track and field teams to compete at the OHSAA State Championships at Ohio State University. The trip, running from June 5-7, will be funded through the athletic department with assistance from the Twinsburg Athletic Boosters.
The board’s next meeting is scheduled for June 25 at 6:30 p.m. at Twinsburg High School. All meetings include time for public comment and are livestreamed for community access.
