9 Secrets of the Oldest and Healthiest People on the Planet

Happiness is one thing most, if not all, of us are seeking. After treating over 13,000 patients one of the most important things I’ve learned is, “Health and Happiness” go together. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you can’t be happy if you are sick and tired. But it’s a whole lot easier to be happy if you are healthy. Over the next 9 weeks, I will share 9 Secrets of Health and Happiness from people who live in the “Blue Zones.” These pearls of wisdom are based on the research Dan Buettner, his team of scientists and National Geographic discovered in their quest to find the healthiest people on the planet. I’ll also share my own personal experience from my recent visit to one of the “Blue Zones” in Nicoya, Costa Rica.

People living in the “Blue Zones” don’t try to be healthy. They don’t have personal trainers, go to a gym to work-out or follow a particular “diet.” Instead, their lifestyle is healthy from the cradle to the grave. You don’t have to pack your bags and move to one of the blue zones to find health and happiness. You can do it right where you live, I’ll show you how to do it.

Today’s take home “Blue Zone Secret #1.” Most people are surprised when I don’t immediately zoom in on which foods to eat to live healthy, long lives. One of the most important things the longest-lived people in the blue zones do is to belong to social circles that support healthy behaviors. For example, Okinawans create “moais” (pronounced ma-wo-eyes), small groups of friends (around 5) committed to support each other for life. In my clinical experience, being part of the right “tribe” (wellness buddies), is the most important facet of making healthy habits stick for a lifetime. Researchers have concluded that good and bad lifestyle behaviors are contagious. People of the blue zones lives are shaped by sharing healthy behaviors within their “tribe.” So, simply start or join a health conscious “tribe’ and you’ll be sure to thrive in your own blue zone. Stay tuned in for BLUE ZONE Secret #2!
