WIND STORM CAUSES HAVOC   THROUGHOUT OUR AREA

Last Wednesday our entire region and beyond experienced a wind storm not seen in many years. Sustained winds of 30MPH with some gusts over 60MPH knocked down many trees and caused power outages and fires. Sustained power outages occurred in our Township at the intersection of Laurie and Kathy after a large tree uprooted and pulled down all the utility lines and then caused a pole and transformer to crash to the ground.

A large Pine tree fell on wires at the intersection of Skylane and Pleasantview causing a power outage for all residents on both of those streets. Another very large Pine tree fell across Beacon Hill and caused the entire street to be without power.

During this event I was in contact with our Road Department, the Summit County Emergency Management Agency, The American Red Cross, Macedonia Fire Chief Tim Black and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. My concern was the forecast for temperatures in the teens and 20’s and the news we were receiving that the power might not be restored until Saturday! All of these agencies were ready, willing and able to assist us if and when needed.

Power was restored for Skylane and Pleasantview at around 6PM last night. Today, Chief Black and I along with several members of the Macedonia Fire Department walked and knocked on every door along Beacon Hill to see if any residents needed assistance. Everyone seemed to be taking the outage in stride, especially those with portable generators! Finally, at around noon, a line crew all the way from from the State of Missouri arrived and began restoration work. Presumably the power should be restored by this afternoon. The outage at Laurie and Kathy will take much longer due to the extensive damage.

I would like to thank all those who helped us during this event, especially Chief Tim Black and our Sheriff’s deputies who were on top of this from the beginning. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about being prepared for emergencies like this. Spring isn’t even here yet and we’ve already experienced two wild weather events less than a week or so apart.

I urge everyone to read and share my “EMERGENCY & DISASTER PREPAREDNESS GUIDE” that can be viewed on the following website:

“ROAD CLOSED” BARRICADES MEAN ROAD CLOSED!

During every event that has resulted in road closures, some people have taken it upon themselves to move “ROAD CLOSED” barricades and to then drive on the closed road. This week was no exception. This is not only a very dangerous practice, it IS ILLEGAL! I’ve personally witnessed people doing this and then driving through flood water and within a few feet of live 7,500-volt power lines! On a couple of past incidents both a Sheriff deputy and I witnessed this and the violators were arrested on the spot and received heavy fines.

The only people having the authority to remove or otherwise change road closed barricades are the authorities who put them in place. To the untrained eye, a dangerous situation might not be readily evident but believe me, if the road is closed THERE IS DANGER AHEAD. Heed the barricades for your own safety and the safety of others. To do otherwise could open yourself up to not only criminal charges but financial liability as well!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q >>> – Are there plans to pave the southern part of Olde Eight Rd.? Between Highland & Brandywine it is getting pretty rough.
A >>> – We are not sure what the County has in store for your concern. We’ve made inquiries and will let you know when we find out.

Q >>> – Will the township provide a dumpster for the spoiled food that me and my neighbors have due to the electric outage from the wind storm?
A >>> – No.

Q >>> – I was wondering what the process is for replacing my driveway. I live in Brandywine Preserve and if I’m just replacing, no changes in size or materials, prior approval is not required. I’m just wondering about the Township.
A >>> – As long as there are no changes in size or materials as you stated, then no permits are required.

Q >>> – A neighbor recently died and there is rumor that he overdosed. If this is true, the problem really hits close to home and my wife and I applaud your work with the sheriff’s department in trying to clean up our neighborhood. Thank you for your diligent work in trying to better our community.
A >>> – According to my sources, preliminary information indicates that the unfortunate death of your neighbor was NOT a drug overdose.

Q >>> – We were scheduled for recycle pick-up on March 8th. Due to high winds on the 7th, we did not put the recycle container out the night before. Between 7:30 and 8:00 on the 8th, the recycle truck went down the street, many neighbors scrambled to take the bins to the curb, thinking they would make a second trip to pick up the second side, especially because there were only a couple of bins out that early in the morning. Kimble never returned. If they are going to change their schedule (they normally pick up recycle sometime after 10:00), we should be notified. We feel they took advantage of the high winds and customer’s reluctance to take the bins out the night before, allowing them to rush through their pick-up schedule. I’m sure they finished in record time! Please pass this complaint on to Kimble.
A >>> – I passed your concern on to Kible’s representative, Don Johnson. The following is the quick response that I received from him: “Hi Paul, It appears due to many residents not placing their carts out for collection that our driver may have proceeded through their route ahead of the time they normally pass through an area. I am sorry if this caused an inconvenience to the residents but have them placed their carts out for collection next week. At times due to an accident or construction blocking a certain access road our drivers do change how their routes are run. That is why we ask that carts/ materials be set out by 7:00 a.m. Thanks Don R. Johnson”

Paul, I love your philosophy and your devotion to keeping the residents up to date. I also share your strong support for ALL the amendments…not the least of which is the 2nd. To the eight buttercups that unsubscribed from your newsletter….good riddance. CNN will surely write a segment sympathizing with them. Make America Great Again.

There are some of us out here who do know history and do know when someone is not telling the TRUTH! Why does OUR President continue to insist he had the largest win since Ronald Regan? He really should check his facts before he opens his mouth! signed—Jim Shiban

Thank you for publishing our US history for those who either did not learn government or simply choose to forget what they were taught. Schoolhouse Rock even has a video explaining the Electoral College titled, I’m Gonna Send Your Vote to College. I may not always agree with your views but they are YOUR views, but when you speak facts it is impossible to deny the truth. We are most definitely a Republic and I for one am thankful. Keep up the good work!
…………………………………………………….

I must say I give you respect for standing your ground and not backing down to people when your attacked by stating facts that they are to lazy to look up themselves. We need more honesty and less PC in this country.
…………………………………………………….

I saw you and fire chief Black walking on our street during the heavy snow falling and checking each house while the power was out. My wife and I thank you, the chief and the fire personnel for watching over us. We also saw an increase in the Sheriff patrols and thank them as well. We are very fortunate to have caring representatives watching over us as all of you have. THANK YOU!!
