Through Sullivan’s Eye: My First American Culture Shock

By JC Sullivan
We transferred from a mostly Irish school neighborhood to a Hungarian school neighborhood…a culture shock to this 7th grader.
One of my classmates told me to go to Fr. Godina’s confessional box. “Put on the earphones, it sounds like he’s on the radio.” That sounded cool, like ‘Pilot to Navigator, Pilot to Navigator.’
So my next time there I put them on my ears. Came my turn, the slide between us was activated. I heard Bela Lugosi’s deep voice ask, “Vy are you USING that. You don’t NEEED  it?”
It was like, 0MIGOD…they can see us!!! They know WHO WE ARE!!! I left the earphones dangling and never returned to his confessional.
