Nordonia Foundation Mini Grant Recipient: Aaron Coleman – DNA Day

The Foundation was established in 1995, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization that operates independent of the Board of Education.  It is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees made up of business, education, parent, alumni, student and community leaders.

The Nordonia Foundation provides Mini Grants for Academic Advancement and Enrichment. More information about the Nordonia Foundation can be found here.
We at Nordonia Hills News would like to feature some of the mini grants that were awarded in the fall of 2015.

CDXl4UXW8AIjfCyApril 22, 2016 Nordonia High School will be celebrating DNA Day. DNA Day is an internationally celebrated Day honoring the anniversary of the 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick discovery of the double helical structure of DNA and the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. National events are organized by the National Human Genome Research institute www.genome.gov. Students will be engaged in costume contests, edible genetic creation contests, quiz shows, and twitter scavenger hunts. In addition we host guest speakers including a genetic counselor, forensic DNA analyst, and a high school student with a genetic disorder. Each guest speaker does a 15 minute presentation each class period of the day. We invite student families and community members into the building to enjoy the celebration and learn a little about DNA and genetics of the past, present, and future. We want to encourage anyone in the community that would be interested in the event to visit us at NHS. RSVP or questions to me aaron.coleman@nordoniaschools.org.

One highlight each year is the DNA themed staff music video. You can see any of these by searching Nordonia DNA Day on YouTube. Our video was seen by the Director Eric Green of the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, MD this summer and he sent us a formal letter of appreciation for what we do to promote genomic education at NHS. Last year’s video is here:
