License Plate Vanishes During School Day

April 11

On April 11, a Macedonia resident discovered her rear license plate (Ohio JXY9492) missing from her 2019 Chevrolet Equinox after returning home from work. The victim had left her residence that morning at 7:20 AM to drop off her children at Ledgeview Elementary and Nordonia High School before heading to work in Bedford.

The vehicle was last seen with its plate intact around 8:01 AM driving northbound on SR 8 at Forbes Road in Bedford, as confirmed by FLOCK camera footage. While at work, the victim’s vehicle remained unattended in the school parking lot from approximately 8:03 AM until 4:00 PM. Upon arriving home, she noticed the missing plate while walking her dog.

The plate was entered into LEADS as stolen and the Macedonia Detective Bureau was contacted to enter the vehicle into the FLOCK camera system. The victim was advised to obtain a new license plate from the BMV and is awaiting review of security footage from her workplace.

Designer Goods Disappear in Kohl’s Shoplifting Spree

April 9

Kohl’s Loss Prevention reported a theft that occurred on April 9 at their Macedonia Commons location. A Kohl’s employee was alerted to the incident by a colleague who had apprehended Shanika Brown in Wadsworth.

Security footage showed Brown entering the Macedonia Kohl’s at 11:35 AM and heading directly to the Sephora section, where she began selecting and concealing merchandise in her clothing. The employee stated that Brown “concealed the items in the front of her pants” and later placed additional items “in the pockets of her jacket.” Brown then exited the Sephora area, walked across the store “passing all points of final sale, while making no attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise,” before leaving through the south doors.

The total value of stolen merchandise amounted to $818.00. Wadsworth Police Department currently has the property in their possession under report #22504038. Brown has been charged with theft (M1) through Macedonia Mayor’s Court. Kohl’s is requesting Brown be trespassed from the property and ordered to pay restitution in the full amount.

Citizen Thwarts Online Banking Fraud

April 16

A Macedonia resident reported that he had received an email from Citizens Bank at 11:00 AM informing him that someone had opened a checking account and applied for a credit card in his name without his authorization.

The victim immediately visited the Macedonia Citizens Bank branch at 663 E. Aurora Road, where he spoke with the branch manager. She instructed him to file a police report and contact the credit bureau about the incident.

Police later spoke with the manager, who confirmed that “the checking account that had been created online had been flagged and closed,” and the victim had been “instructed to call the Citizens Bank credit card phone number to have the credit card application flagged and cancelled.” The victim was not financially impacted by the incident and only required a police report for the credit bureaus.

OVI (Operating Vehicle Impaired)

Third OVI in Six Years Lands Driver in Jail

April 13

Macedonia Police received a call about a Toyota RAV-4 traveling southbound on S. Bedford Road toward Highland Road “all over the roadway.” Officers observed the vehicle make an improper turn from Highland Road to SR 8, turning from “the far-left lane of Highland to the far-right lane of SR 8 southbound” without using a turn signal.

Upon approaching the driver, identified as Maina Gurung from Cleveland, police noted she “had a hard time focusing” and “was looking past me” while fumbling to retrieve her identification. Gurung admitted she “had a few drinks earlier in the morning” and was returning home from her sister’s house in Cuyahoga Falls.

Field sobriety tests showed numerous signs of impairment. During the walk and turn test, Gurung “could not stay in position for the instruction phase” and kept “attempting to lean against the rear of her vehicle.” She also showed impairment during the one leg stand test, placing “her foot down multiple times” and failing to “count correctly.” A subsequent breath test revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.230, nearly three times the legal limit.

Gurung was arrested and charged with OVI, OVI breath (BAC over 0.17%), and improper turning at intersections. She was held without bond due to this being her “third OVI in 6 years” and assigned a court date of April 14 at Stow Municipal Court.

The owner explained that a section of the bowling alley had been rented for a child’s birthday party, and after the party, “while the parents were socializing and cleaning up, three small children from the party were roughhousing in the lobby and fell into a large window, causing it to break.”

The parent had provided contact information and agreed to pay for all damages. The parent later came to the Macedonia Police Station, where she completed a statement confirming the owner’s account and reiterated her commitment to covering the cost of repairs.

Late Night Drive-Thru Mishap Damages Raising Cane’s Handrail

April 9

A manager at Raising Cane’s on E. Aurora Road reported that a metal pipe handrail was damaged by a vehicle around 10:20 PM on April 9. According to the manager, two women had entered the restaurant at 10:10 PM before returning to their “smaller black colored SUV.” While attempting to exit “the wrong way,” the vehicle struck and bent a metal pipe handrail.

Following the collision, the occupants exited their vehicle to inspect the damage to their SUV, using a light to examine it carefully. However, at no point did they enter the restaurant to report the incident or check what they had struck. The vehicle remained in the parking lot for “approximately 20 minutes before leaving the scene.” The manager stated he would request video footage from corporate regarding the incident.

Disorderly Conduct

Fast Food Fury: Customer Throws Food at Wendy’s Drive-Thru

April 11

A Wendy’s employee contacted police regarding a disorderly customer in the drive-thru lane. The customer, described as driving a blue Toyota with Wisconsin license plate 21960A, became upset about an incorrect order and began “to throw food and a water bottle full of alcohol at the drive thru window.” The vehicle contained a female driver, a female passenger, and two juveniles in the backseat.

A shift leader explained that the customer was “holding the horn down on the vehicle” until she approached the window. After requesting a refund because the order was wrong, the customer refused to return the food as requested. The shift leader reported that “at that point the customer became enraged and started to throw the food at the window.” She closed the window to protect employees, after which the customer “threw the water bottle full of alcohol at the window” before driving away.

Macedonia dispatch tracked the vehicle on Flock Cameras at multiple locations between 9:06 PM and 9:32 PM, but officers were unable to locate it. All Wendy’s employees provided statements, and the restaurant manager indicated they only wanted a report filed at this time.
