Ice Hockey: Annual Parma Tournament

By Carson Carrell

Last weekend the Nordonia Knights took part in the annual MLK Tournament held at the Michael A. Ries Ice Arena. The competition was fierce but the Knights played well against the upper division teams.

The First game was against Parma High School. Nordonia lost to the white division Redmen 2-10 but the Knights unyielding effort never wavered through all three periods. Nordonia’s defense stayed strong and played almost penalty free which helped keep Parma from a shut-out. The team dog was awarded to defenseman Kenton Carrell for his speed and poke-checking ability which prevented additional goals.

The second game against CVCA ended in a loss to the Royals with a final score of  1-4. Carson Carrell, the Captain of the Knights, suffered a head injury within the first few minutes of the starting puck drop and was unable to play the remainder of the game. Nordonia managed to keep the score close despite the line change up.  The team dog was given to Max Zuschin who scored the only goal for the Knights preventing the shut out.

The final game of the tournament was against Aurora High School which was the closest of all the games. The Knights lost 1-3 to the Greenmen but Nordonia had the upper division team rattled. The score remained tied 1-1 through the second period. This was the third match up between the two teams and this was the best the Knights have ever played against the Greenmen Nordonia ended up winning the second period of tournament play which was an accomplishment. Goalie Tommy Lippincott had 35 saves against Aurora and was awarded the team dog for his stellar efforts.

The Knights are still on track for the division banner and the Baron Cup. Nordonia has one of their biggest games coming up against Mayfield on February 1, 2020, which should be close and fierce. The Knights are coming out strong. Go Knights!

Tonight the Knights play Notre Dame/Cathedral Latin at 7:10 pm
