Macedonia Council Meeting: Mutual Aid, Charter Amendments And New City Signs

Council approved the transfer of a long-awaited 2023 Dodge Durango police pursuit vehicle to the City of Stow Police Department on August 24.

The Durango was going to take the place of an older Ford Fusion driven by Macedonia Police Chief Vince Yakopovich when he was a lieutenant.

However, due to a crash earlier this year in which a Stow officer’s cruiser was totaled and a shortage of immediately available police pursuit vehicles, Stow Police Chief Jeff Film reached out to Yakopovich.

“I get it,” Yakopovich said “You know the situation we were in. I get it.”

According to Yakopovich “no one can find cars.”

“We are kinda doing the neighborly thing. We agreed to transfer this car to Stow for use,” Yakopovich said.

Macedonia needs the vehicle but can press other units into service, Yakopovich said.

Macedonia has waited years and experienced myriad delays in buying police vehicles.

“We ordered all the cars because we didn’t know what was coming in,” the chief said. “We were fortunate enough to get a couple of Durangos off the lot for the lieutenants’ cars.”

No one else had a pursuit-rated vehicle available, Yakopovich added.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Yakopovich said. “They let us use their range and they take care of us.”

Mayor Nick Molnar agreed.

“To be clear this is a vehicle we need, but it’s not needed immediately,” Molnar said.

Council voted to place three amendments to the Macedonia Charter on the ballot. The votes were to place the ordinances on the November ballot, according to Council President Jessica Brandt.

“They were items that were recommended to us by the Charter Commission which meets every five years,” she added. “We are voting to put them on the ballot. And if all three pass today they will be on the November ballot.”

Council voted to enter into a contract with Signara Cleveland to erect an electronic sign on the east side of the city.

“We’ve been working on this for about a year and ½ according to Molnar.

Signs throughout the city will also be replaced.
