NHS Boys Varsity Volleyball Falls Short to Brunswick at First Home Game Wednesday March 22, 2023

Coach Rocco Covelli, along with assistant coaches Andrea Maldonado and Eric Sopata helped the boys’ varsity volleyball play close against Brunswick. Nordonia Knights won the first set against Brunswick 25-17 getting the crowd cheering aloud at their first home varsity game.

Middle Hitter (MH) #13 Brandon Matteo’s front line spiking skills prove a difficult match for Brunswick. Matteo, along with Setter (S) #9 Zac Fernandez blocked many of their opponents’ hits, creating a wall when they were in the front row together. Outside Hitters (OH) EJ Sopata #0 and Gianni Covelli #1 showcased their powerful hitting skills, assisting both offense and defense.

Knights were down by five (21-15) in the second set, pulling up all points needed to almost tie. Defensive Specialist (DF) Cameron Anquillaire #21 solidifies the tie by serving up two points in a row 24-24. Brunswick scores two in a row to surge into the lead and win a close second set 26-24.

Brunswick stayed ahead several points for much of the third set, creating a challenge for the knights to get out from behind. Nordonia loss of third set 12-25.

Fourth set looked much like the third set, only Nordonia was ahead by ten points for the majority of the time. Brunswick picked up some points with their setters, but fell short by 8 points, when Nordonia won 25-17.

Knights varsity lost 13-15 against Brunswick in the fifth and final set of their first home game. Next Varsity home game Friday March 24 @ 6pm vs. Independence.

Knights junior varsity won 1 of 3 sets played against Brunswick, with scores (1) 25-21, (2) 15-25, and a close and final third set loss (3) 22-25.
