Nordonia Freshman Tests Positive for COVID-19

Dear Nordonia High School Faculty, Staff and Families,

It was brought to my attention today, September 27, that a 9th grade student at NHS has tested positive for COVID-19. After the student experienced symptoms (runny nose, sore throat, body aches and chills) on Friday, September 25, the student’s parents took the child for testing. Today the parents received results confirming a positive test.

We have begun working with Summit County Public Health to determine the contacts of this student. Summit County Public Health (with our assistance) will notify contacts of students or employees who test positive for COVID-19. A contact is defined as someone who was within six feet of the infected person for at least 15 minutes. Contacts of contacts will not be notified.

The student will not return to school until 10 days have passed since the symptoms first appeared, AND the student has no fever for at least one day without medication AND all other symptoms have improved.

When an employee or student tests positive, I will inform all employees in the building(s) in which the infected person works or attends school. I will also inform all families of students who attend the building when school is in session. Under HIPAA privacy law, I will not release names of those who test positive.

In addition to informing all employees and families of the building the student attends, I am also required to inform parents of students who are in classes or extra curricular activities with students who test positive. This student is a member of the Option 1 Knights group, meaning the student attends school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The student is a member of the Nordonia High School Marching Band, and the student’s daily schedule is as follows:

Period 1: English with Mrs. Czekaj
Period 2: Spanish with Mrs. Walton
Period 3: Biology with Mrs. Coleman
Period 4A: Study Hall with Mr. Russ
Period 4B: Study Hall with Mr. Cash
Period 4C and 5A: Marching Band
Period 5B: Lunch
Period 6: History with Mr. Lucak
Period 7: Geometry with Mrs. Buss

As a reminder, we encourage all Nordonia families to practice social distancing, wear masks, wash their hands frequently, and stay home if feeling ill in any way.

Thanks, and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Sincerely,
Joe Clark,
