Christopher’s Nordonia Sports Report: Knights on the Rise: A Look at Nordonia Athletics Across Every Level

Knight Watch: A weekly Nordonia Sports Roundup written by student reporter Christopher Hovanetz, sharing highlights and updates from across Knight Nation — all year long.

Nordonia Knights Athletics Newsletter
From varsity stadiums under the Friday night lights to freshman gyms where the next generation of Knights is just getting started, Nordonia High School’s athletic program continues to be one of the deepest and most active in the Suburban League. With teams competing at the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman levels across nearly every season, Nordonia gives student-athletes of all ages and experience levels a place to compete, grow, and represent the green, white, and black.

A Program Built on Depth
Nordonia fields teams in baseball, basketball (boys and girls), bowling, cheerleading, cross country, flag football, football, golf (boys and girls), gymnastics, ice hockey, soccer (boys and girls), softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling. Many of these programs carry varsity, JV, and freshman squads, giving incoming ninth graders a clear pathway to develop alongside upperclassmen before stepping into varsity competition.

That depth was on full display this past year. The football program turned in another strong season, while the girls golf team made program history by sweeping all four Suburban League tournaments — the first time any Nordonia squad has accomplished that feat. The Knights’ winter and spring seasons also saw deep playoff runs, including a regional semifinal appearance for the football team against Archbishop Hoban.

Fall: Where the Energy Builds
Fall is when Nordonia athletics really starts to hum. Football, both boys’ and girls’ soccer, volleyball, cross country, golf, and girls tennis all kick off practices in late summer, with most teams beginning conditioning and tryouts in the weeks before the school year starts. Football alone fields varsity, JV, and freshman squads, giving players a multi-year runway to develop under the program’s veteran coaching staff before earning varsity minutes on Friday nights at Boliantz Stadium.

Beyond the football field, fall is also when cross country and golf get their seasons underway, with both programs building on recent league-tournament success.

Winter: Basketball, Wrestling, and More
Winter brings boys and girls basketball, wrestling, swimming, bowling, and ice hockey into the spotlight. Like football, basketball runs varsity, JV, and freshman teams, which means packed gyms most weeknights as multiple levels of Knights basketball take the court. Beyond the wins and losses, this season’s basketball programs also organized a toy drive that brought in more than 75 toys for children across Greater Akron — a reminder that Nordonia athletics extends its impact well beyond the scoreboard.

Spring: Baseball, Softball, Track, and Tennis
As the weather warms, baseball, softball, track and field, boys tennis, and girls golf take over. These spring programs round out a true year-round athletic calendar at Nordonia, ensuring there’s rarely a season without Knights competing somewhere.

Why the Varsity-JV-Freshman Structure Matters
Nordonia’s commitment to fielding teams at all three levels isn’t just about numbers — it reflects a development philosophy. Freshman teams let new high schoolers learn the speed and physicality of high school competition, JV squads bridge the gap and prepare players for varsity minutes, and varsity teams compete for league titles and playoff runs. That pipeline has paid off, with several recent varsity standouts having come up through Nordonia’s JV and freshman programs.

Looking Ahead
With practices and tryouts for fall sports set to begin in the coming weeks, Nordonia’s athletic department is gearing up for another busy year across every level of competition. Whether it’s a freshman taking the field for the first time or a senior chasing a league championship, Nordonia’s varsity, JV, and freshman programs all share the same goal: compete hard, represent the school well, and build something bigger than any single season.
Go Knights!
