Northfield Village Council President Jennifer Domzalski wants people in the community spending time outside now that the weather is nicer, and the state’s COVID-19 health orders soon will be lifted.

At the May 12 meeting, she recommended Council waive the permit fee for a June event she wants taking place monthly in the summer, encouraging residents to leave their homes while supporting local crafters.

On June 13, another craft market will be taking place in the parking lot of Pepper’s Farmers Market, 10211 Northfield Road, she said.

Domzalski spoke with the event organizers to express her support for the outdoor activity.

“Our hope is that this grows,” she said.

Domzalski asked Council to approve a motion to waive the permit fee for the event for the month of June, with members agreeing to do so.

She requested the village also put a handicap accessible port-a-potty at the site, with the cost not to exceed $200, for the June event.

Law Director Brad Bryan told Domzalski the village needs the paperwork filled out for the activity, regardless of the fee being waived, as it is important to know who is holding an event in the community and where.

He noted the $50 permit fee was established following an incident with a large flea market being held in the village in the 1990s. The village, at that time, also began a $3 per vendor, per day fee to take part in a flea market.

Domzalski said the craft fair organizers have permission from Pepper’s to continue to use the location. She said she will instruct them to confirm they have permission from the plaza owner to hold the event in June, as well. She also will tell them to fill paperwork out with the village.

Domzalski said Council could choice to waive the fee for the craft fair in July, as well, if it would like to do so.

“We are not sponsoring this event, just encouraging this event,” she noted. “We want to see families out of their houses and buying some crafts.”

Drainage Project Contract

Also, at the meeting, council authorized awarding a contract to HSH Construction and Excavating Inc., of Wadsworth, for the drainage improvement project for Jefferson Drive.
Engineer Daniel Collins said the village received four bids for the project, with the bid opening taking place on May 6. He estimated the project would cost about $163,000, with HSH’s bid coming in at $166,000, with a 5 percent contingency included in the amount.

“I worked with HSH before and was impressed how they performed,” he said.

Collins said he would like to see the project commence quickly, as some materials needed could be difficult to obtain. The contractor said the project should start by the end of June and take about 90 days, weather permitting, he said.

Collins noted the village likely will obtain Community Cost-Share Program funds, approximately $30,000 worth, through the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to help afford the project.
