You see the term “non-GMO” everywhere, but what exactly is a GMO? A GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. Basically organisms that have genetic material that have been artificially manipulated in a lab through genetic engineering.
Top GMO crops:
-Corn 88%
-Soybeans 94%
-Beet Sugar 90%
-Cotton 90%
-Canola 93%
More than 60 countries have banned GMOs because they consider GMOs to be unsafe. Yet the United States approve GMOs because of the profit from their sale.
How to tell if product is non-GMO:
There are different things to look for to know if the product is truly non gmo. For example, look for the official non-gmo project verified seal with the butterfly or the organic logo. When it comes to produce it gets more complicated. On produce look for the digit code. If there is 5 digits starting with 8 then it is gmo and if it starts with 9 then it is organic. However, if it is 4 digits starting with a 3 or 4 then that means it is conventional. Conventional basically means non-organic.
Difference between non-GMO and organic:
The truth is that non-GMO and organic are different. They both do not contain any genetically modified organisms. However, certified organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides.
