Macedonia Council Meeting: Responders Praised For Responsiveness/ Heroism

While the news is filled with divisive and hate-filled attitudes toward first responders, one resident is thankful for the “responsiveness” and “heroism” shown to her mother by Macedonia and Sagamore Hills first responders during a February family emergency.

The letter was read at the June 22 Council meeting.

“This team’s collective care has impacted my mother and my family for the greater,” the daughter wrote in an email to Macedonia Fire Chief Brian Ripley. The writer’s parents had returned from vacation on February 9, around 1 a.m. His father left to check the mailbox. Upon his return, the writer’s mom was found to be unresponsive.

The father called 911 and the dispatcher talked him through CPR until an officer arrived a few minutes later with an AED.

The officer “administered a shock that ultimately saved my mother’s life,” the daughter wrote.

The entire team allowed her mom to make a “successful and complete recovery.”

“It takes special people to do this line of work,” she added. “They were no doubt giving it their all.”

The outcome could have been much different.

“As they worked on my mother I saw visions of holidays changed forever – my sister’s fall 2023 wedding without a mother, explaining to my 3-year-old where her GaGa grandma is, and why she can’t see her,” the email continued. “Thank God none of these happened thanks to this team.”

The family cannot thank the team enough and will be forever grateful for everything, she said.

An honorable mention award should be given to each member of the team who helped save her mom’s life, she wrote.

“I hope they will be considered for such a thing if they exist,” she wrote. “They deserve them and more.”

Mayor Nicholas Molnar called the email an amazing testament to our fire department and all the people who work with us.”

“And not only that, the partnership with neighboring police departments,” Molnar added. “A life was saved, and I think it’s just amazing that she took the time to write that for us.”

According to Ripley, the letter showed “the entire system worked.”

“I thought it was a demon’s trunk of how the system is supposed to work when all the pieces were in place,” Ripley said. “And it was also a very touching email to read.”
