Summit County Executive Wins Mayors’ Cup Challenge

On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro was awarded the Inaugural Mayors’ Cup for her staff’s volunteerism at the World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational.  The Mayors’ Cup Challenge was a friendly competition between local governments to recruit employees to serve as volunteers for the annual PGA TOUR Event and featured government employees from Akron, Barberton, Cuyahoga Falls, Green, Stow, and the County of Summit.

Because Summit County registered the greatest number of new Bridgestone Invitational volunteers, proportional to their size, The Northern Ohio Golf Charities awarded the Mayors’ Cup to Executive Shapiro.

“Not only does this event bring more than $20 million to the area, it also provides a wonderful opportunity for our community members to get involved by volunteering.  I am delighted that Summit County was the winner, but with this kind of volunteerism, we all win,” said Executive Shapiro. Over the next five days, Firestone Country Club will see 1374 volunteers from twenty seven states and three countries engaging in a variety of duties.  The County of Summit’s employees comprise 70 of those volunteers.  The Mayors’ Cup Challenge helped assure that the Event’s Volunteer Committees reached their maximum capacity.

“I encourage all residents to stop out to visit or tune in to watch this world class event that takes place right here in Summit County,” said Executive Shapiro.  Tens of thousands of spectators will walk the course, watching the world’s best golfers.  Broadcast internationally, footage of the tournament is expected to reach nearly one billion homes.
