Summit County Honors Women’s History Month

SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—On March 1, 2021, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and County Council passed legislation declaring March Women’s History Month in the county. Celebrated nationally, Women’s History Month honors the achievements of all women throughout the history of the United States and the contributions they have made while enduring discrimination, and fighting for the right to own property, the right to vote, and gender equality.

“During Women’s History Month we honor the women of the past who broke barriers and paved the way for the women of the present and future,” said Executive Shapiro. “I am forever grateful for the women of Summit County and their many contributions to our community. We should always be conscious of how much women have accomplished, how hard they have had to fight for these achievements, and how they are still fighting for equality today.”

Following President Jimmy Carter’s proclamation of Women’s History Week in 1980, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress in 1987, resulting in the proclamation of the month of March as Women’s History Month in perpetuity. The purpose of the declaration is to honor the women of the United States and the countless contributions they have made to the nation throughout its history. The declaration also recognizes the many barriers women have encountered and ultimately conquered, such as fighting for the right to vote, the right to own property, and those barriers they are still challenging, including gender equality and discrimination.

“Each March we celebrate the achievements made by women of the past and present in Summit County and around the nation,” said Council President Elizabeth Walters. “I hope all Summit County residents take time this month to reflect on the contributions of women, especially women right here in our own community.”
