Tanker Explosion in Town Causes Road Closures

Update: As of  January 28, 2024 10:15 a.m., State Route 8 southbound is still closed. The ramp to Interstate 271 north is open.

On January 27, 2024, at approximately 9:15 a.m., the Summit County Sheriff’s Office and Macedonia Police Department responded to a traffic crash at the ramp to Interstate 271 north in Northfield Center Township. Sheriff’s deputies determined a tanker truck had been travelling northbound on State Route 8 and attempted to get on Interstate 271 north, when the truck lost control and went over the side of the bridge. The truck landed onto the northbound lanes of State Route 8 and subsequently burst into flames. Summit County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Units along with deputies from the Summit County Jail responded to the scene. The Summit County HAZMAT Team, Macedonia Fire Department, Twinsburg Fire Department, and other local fire departments responded to the scene. It was determined the driver of the tanker truck died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The ramp from State Route 8 to I271 north is currently closed and State Route 8 is currently closed in both directions. It will remain closed until the bridge can be inspected for safety. The crash is under investigation by the Summit Metro Crash Team.
