State Wrestling Tournament: Wrestler Spotlight – Mitch Collica By Jessica Archer (PHOTO GALLERY)

Mitch Collica (138 lbs) finished 8th in the State last year at 138 lbs.  Returning to 138 as a Senior, he was joined by a stacked group of athletes creating what can arguably be the toughest weight class in Division 1 this year.  All season as these guys met, matches were decided by a point or two and went both ways. The State Tournament proved much of the same. Collica opened up Thursday falling to Jake Niffenegger from LaSalle 6-4.  Niffenegger went on to become the State Runner-up, losing to Bryce Hepner from St. Ed’s in the finals. Later Thursday night, Collica answered back, pinning Lincoln Heard from Marysville to advance to the Consolation Round 2 matches on Friday.  It was here that his high school wrestling career ended as he fell to Gus Sutton of Austintown-Fitch 3-2. Sutton went onto finish third, beating Matt Zuckerman from Elyria 6-4. The fifth place match in this weight class was won by Luke Baughman of Wadsworth over Marco Regalbuto of Brecksville; Collica beat Baughman 3-2 this season in a league match. Collica will continue his wrestling career in college, attending Ballarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky.
