Summit County Sheriff’s Office investigating 1-77 road rage gunfire exchange ending with one wounded

On 1 1-03-2018, at approximately 2312 hours, a Summit County Sheriffs Deputy observed a vehicle off the side of the roadway, southbound on Interstate 77 at Mile Post 115.8. The Deputy arrived at the vehicle and encountered two individuals actively firing rounds near a second vehicle that was stopped. The two male subjects immediately surrendered to deputies, and no deputies were involved in the shooting. One male was found injured, with a single gunshot wound and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. This male would be admitted to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The initial on-scene investigation determined the following: Two vehicles, a 2014 Honda HRV (purple in color) and a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze (red in color) had been involved in a road rage incident while traveling southbound on 1-77. The two vehicles encountered each other on the interstate between South Arlington Road and Massillon Road. The vehicles eventually collided and came to rest on the side of the interstate near Mile Post 115.8

One of the drivers exited their vehicle and confronted the second vehicle driver while he was still in his vehicle with his wife and two young children. The confrontation between the two ended with both parties discharging firearms. The occupants of the second vehicle were not injured. Both persons possessing the weapons did have active CC W licenses that had been issued outside of Summit County.

According to Sheriff Steve Barry, “there were four total people in the one vehicle, including an adult female and two young children, thankfully they weren’t injured or this would have been a far worse tragedy.” The sheriff added “do not get involved in road rage incidents, make every attempt to evade this type of situation for everyone’s safety, it’s just not worth it. ”

The sheriffs office is asking for the public’s assistance in that anyone who witnessed any part of this incident to please call their Detective Bureau at 330-643-2131 as the investigation is active and continuing.

Any questions concerning this press release should be addressed to Sheriff Steve Barry at 330-608-2784.
