SIX MONTH UPDATE ON FIRE DEPARTMENT CONSOLIDATION
BY: Macedonia Fire Chief, Tim Black
It has been six months since we started on this venture! Much work has been done and much more awaits us! I would like to thank you for this opportunity to serve you and your public. As you can see below we have handled many calls and weathered 2 major storms. I am happy with how we have progressed throughout the last six months. We have learned and adapted to better serve our residents. This could not have been done without your commitment to the consolidation and to your residents. Below is the last six months in call volumes. Our response times have averaged under 5 minutes for all communities!
Macedonia Sagamore Hills Northfield Center
EMS 727 538 250
Fire 142 86 50
Totals 869 624 300
Mutual Aid
IN 33 OUT 31
GRAND TOTAL 1,806 CALLS
All stations are up and running. We should be hooking up at Station 3 to CAD this week. It will help our personnel as well as the Sheriff’s Department locate calls in the Center, as well as give us times from the CAD. Our EMS reports will be up and running soon on Ipads. All vehicles have had major repairs and pumps tested. All SCBA,s have been bench tested and repaired. We do need to make some purchases to bring the MEDIC units up to full working status. Below is the equipment needed for your squad to do this.
Stair chair with stair-treads (Stryker 6252 Stair-Pro) $3058.16
Temporal Arterial Thermometer $485.00
Backboard Straps (x6 sets – cost is 10.50 per set) $63.00
CPAP bag $75.00
(This bag protects the current in-service unit that costs approx $2300.00 to replace unit)
MVA bags (x2 replace old worn out bags at $75.00 each) $150.00
EVAC-U-Splints (Medium x2 @ $111.00) $222.00

Total EMS equipment cost = $4053.16
We are currently utilizing two different knox box systems. Northfield Center and Sagamore on one, and Macedonia on another key system. We cannot account for how many keys were made or where they are at for the Northfield and Sagamore system. I believe we have a solution for this. We can change the tumblers in all the knox boxes in Northfield and Sagamore. Plus we can add a secure system like we have in our vehicles to your vehicles. This system allows access only after your social security number is punched in and logged before you can get the key. The prices are as follows:
26 tumblers @ $25 = $650
2 Master Key retention systems @ $579 = $1,158
We would install it all.
Total= $1,808
We are currently preparing for our ISO recertification. WE WANT TO LOWER OUR NUMBERS! ISO currently looks at dispatch, water supply and Fire Department operations. In the operations they look at equipment on the fire trucks. The current fire trucks lack some essential equipment listed under ISO regulations. We would like to add that equipment to your fire engine. The following is a list of that equipment:
4 Task Force Tip Adaptors $140 each= $560
Hi rise hotel pack $ 110
Hose Jacket $107
Total $777
Grand Total of equipment= $ 6,638.16
These costs are what we need to align our three stations and equipment. I will also be setting up the emergency text alerts for the trustees that want to be notified of major events happening. Get me your phone numbers that will accept texts and we will add you. It is very important to me to keep you INFORMED. This is the best way we have found to alert you. If you have any questions I am always available! Please give me a call. It is a pleasure serving your residents!

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Q >>> – I know this isn’t your department but I was just wondering if BZA [Board of Zoning Appeals] decisions can be appealed? Also, can the BZA hold meetings and legitimately make decisions without all of the members in attendance?
A >>> – BZA decisions are final and cannot be appealed to any other Township departments, boards or administration, including the Board of Trustees. And, as long as there was a quorum of BZA members in attendance, their meetings can be conducted and their votes taken on the issues before them.
Q >>> – I find it to be a double standard when the city allows branch chipping signs along our streets but prohibit all others. Who allowed this and why?
A >>> – There are no double standards in our TOWNSHIP (not city). The Board of Trustees authorized our Road Department to place these temporary signs along OUR roadways to keep YOU the residents informed on this extra service that we are providing to those who suffered damages from the recent wind storm. Had we not put these signs out there would most likely have been complaints from those who believed that they were not properly informed of the service. And now, we have your complaint because we are informing everyone. Thank you for making this job so ‘interesting’!
Q >>> – My neighbors and I would like to ask you for help with the constant dog barking at ***** Cherry Lane. The barking begins at 5:30AM and continues all day and well into the night. We are fed up and are asking you for help. Is there anything that you can do?
A >>> – Summit County has a very strong and enforceable noise ordinance. I heard this same complaint from three of you and have requested the Sheriff’s Office to give this complaint close attention and to try to resolve it as soon as possible. I’ve also alerted our zoning inspector to investigate for possible nuisance violations if the problem is not resolved through the Sheriff. Please let me know if the condition improves or worsens.
Thank you,
