“Knives Out” Movie Review

By Nicholette Marbley

Hello all! I decided to check out the 2019 murder mystery “Knives Out” with a girlfriend last weekend at the  Macedonia Cinemark in Macedonia Commons. This phenomenal movie exceeded all of my expectations. Usually, these types of film bore me with redundant cheesy speaking lines and terrible plots. I was pleasantly surprised to find someone put thought into this one. This movie packs extreme suspense and a dab of cuteness. I adore the character Marta (Ana De Formas). I wish there were an island of her somewhere. The quirkiest and cutest thing about her is that she cannot lie without vomiting (A significant factor in the movie). I was astounded that I could visualize Daniel Craig (Detective Blanc) and Chris Evans (Random Drysdale) as anything other than James Bond and Captain America! That is the mark of a great actor.

The movie was written, produced, and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Ana De Formas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Lakieth Stanfield, Katherine Langford, Jaden Martell, and Christopher Plummer. Wealthy crime novelist, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) invites his immediate and extended family to his 85th birthday party. The wealthy crime novelist ends his night with his usual board game before bed with his caretaker Marta.  She assists him with his nightly medical routine and leaves. She returns the next morning to continue her duties and finds his throat slit. Detective Blanc is brought on the scene to determine whether the death is a suicide or murder. Just like any murder mystery, the head of the family dies and leaves behind a staggering fortune. How it happens, and the discoveries that occur are out of this world.

Watching this movie gave me chills. The fact that the deceased author threatened to cut off the whole family from his fortune makes them all viable suspects; because each of them wanted that money for their selfish reasons. The following characters have the most disgusting motives for wanting to get rid of their famous relative. The following reasons are: his grandson, Randsom Drysdale, wanted to live like a wealthy bachelor for the rest of his life, Walt Thrombey, a cheating husband in law, who used his families wealth and power to lure women into having exciting affairs (played by Michael Shannon), and his granddaughter, Meg Thrombey, whose only concern is using the money to fund college and her career and could care less about anything else(played by Katherine Langford ). The whole family is devastated when Marta inherits the entire fortune. There is a scene in the movie where Linda Drysdale ( Jamie Lee Curtis ), the wife of cheating husband Walt Drysdale, screams at Marta, saying, “Were you ‘boinging’ my father”! Marta’s life changes forever as she is not only left with his money and rights to his Novel collection but inherits his home!  Being pulled in 1,000 directions by family members and detective Blanc (who recruits her secretly in helping in the investigation); causes her perspective on life and people changes forever!

I would give the movie 4 / 5 stars. I found some lines to be cliche and wish they would have modernized it more. The film takes place in modern times, but the majority of the script did not reflect it as far as the service quality in the Macedonia Movie theatre goes, excellent as always!
