A MESSAGE FROM THE FIREFIGHTER’S ASSOCIATION

On August 2nd, residents of Northfield Center Township are being asked to vote on Issue 3 in a special election. This issue will fund a fire levy that will support the Northfield Center Fire Department. This is one of the most important issues that this township has ever faced. After the decision of Sagamore Hills trustees to withdraw from the fire district without considering all of the ramifications of that decision or even the opinions of the very people that elect them, Northfield Center trustees have decided put this decision in the hands of its own.

The levy will support the operations of the township fire department. It will allow the fire department to continue to provide high class and professional fire and EMS services to its residents around the clock, 365 days a year. The money generated from this levy can ONLY be used to support the fire department, contrary to what some people are saying. It is spelled out directly in the ballot language. Without this levy, fire and EMS coverage will have to be contracted to another community, causing a clear sacrifice in staffing and service to you, the residents. Contrary to what has been said, this is not the “regionalization” buzz word that some people have been calling it. People will quickly see the effects that this has on you and your families. The fire department is fiscally responsible, well equipped, expertly trained and has planned for the future.

This issue is bigger than a choice few in the area with political axes to grind, agendas to further or cancerous social media bantering. This is an issue of public safety. We, the firefighters and paramedics of the fire district strongly encourage you to vote YES ON ISSUE 3 so that you can continue to benefit from the high level of service that you currently have. Local community leaders have also been vocal in voicing their support for VOTING YES on this issue. In speaking directly with you the residents, we have found there to be overwhelming support of this fire levy. With a large number of your firefighters/paramedics living in the township, this issue also affects us as much as it does you. We know personally the effects of reducing fire and EMS staffing and coverage and do not want our own families subjected to it. Quite literally, Northfield Center protects its own. We have always had YOUR best interest in mind in everything we do. If we felt as though not supporting the levy was best for you, then that is what we would recommend. However, this is absolutely not the case. Again, we strongly encourage you to VOTE YES ON ISSUE 3.

For nearly 100 years, the Northfield Center Fire Department has provided its service to township residents. The community has always offered overwhelming support and trusted us to come into your homes at a moment’s notice. We are there for you on your worst day. We thank you for your support and hope to continue to provide fire and EMS services to you in a responsible and professional manner for years to come.

This is to notify all readers that the final deadline for pre-election Issue 3 related questions and comments will be THIS SATURDAY, JULY 30TH at noon.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q >>> – Thank you for re-sending Issue #457 of your newsletter.  Helpful.

I apologize for the use of my language when responding to your writing about the majority of people responding favorably regarding the “resurrection” of the NCFD.  You never used the word “large” to describe the majority.  Your exact words were, “The MAJORITY of those people wanted to resurrect our NCFD.”  I mistakenly interpreted your capitalizing, boldfacing, and underlining the word “majority” to mean “an overwhelming majority.”

I also apologize that my sarcastic response to Mr. Romanik’s sarcasm was not as obvious as his.  I did not take his seriously, as you believe, so I will try to make my responses more obvious in the future.  Sorry for the confusion and apparent anger this provoked in you.

Regarding a permanent improvement levy, the News-Leader reported on May 25 that “The Board of Education took the 1st step in placing a 1.49 permanent improvement levy on the Nov. 8 ballot during its May 23 regular meeting.”  No, Mr. Buescher, my intent is not to confuse others or you.  My intent is to hopefully have others consider the true ramifications of their actions.

As a person with a full-time job, a part-time job, living paycheck to paycheck, is it ever taken into consideration how people are expected to just keep paying more taxes?  If passed, my property taxes will increase 10%.  Then, come November, a permanent improvement levy will go on the ballot.  More taxes.  Less to improve my life permanently.  Would you be able to provide account and routing numbers for Summit County.  This way, I could just have my direct deposit routed to Summit.  That’s where it’s headed.  A loss of freedom.  Please provide some thoughts on this, as it was the only item you didn’t address from my last note to you.

A >>> – I spoke with a School Board member today and I am assured that there will be NO SCHOOL LEVY ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT.  Look, you have to understand that we are trying our best to counter all of the misinformation and rumors that are floating around out there.  We only want you folks to get the facts and base your vote on those facts.  You are not the only one out there who is in the financial situation that you describe.  It is my responsibility, along with my two fellow Trustees, to investigate ALL options involving the health, safety and well-being of everyone in this Township.  Resurrecting our Northfield Center Fire Department is the first step in the short list of options.  Once the people decide this issue then we will move on, either by resurrecting the Department or contracting with another department.  I know that this is a very simplistic synopsis but it is what it is.  We are ready for whatever happens.

As far as your last item, I am assuming that you have injected some badly needed sarcastic humor, which I can appreciate.  However, if you’re serious, all I can say is that I have never received a check from the County to see a routing number.  They’ve seen plenty of mine when I pay my taxes!  Sorry I don’t have a definitive answer for you other than to say that we’re all in the same boat!

YOUR GENERAL COMMENTS

I smell something rotten in Denmark, namely the Fire Department Issue.  There is obviously more to it than meets the eye. It seems to me that with Andy LaGuardia having a political foothold in Northfield Center Politics and his dad, Lou LaGuardia, leading the Vote No campaign, a win for the Vote No campaign could be fodder, due to last name recognition, for Andy to run for Trustee at some time prior to reality setting in when the cost of an outside fire protection contract goes sky High.

With that said, I prefer that we control the destiny of our fire protection and not leave it up to politics and outsiders. Macedonia is already in a political and financial mess and is the laughing stock of Northern Summit County. They could be another Jimmy Dimora type fiasco developing.

I think there are two issues here, ACCOUNTABILITY and COST.

Do we want our own fire department which would be accountable to Northfield Center voters, or Macedonia, which would not be accountable to us.  Cost is a no brainer since we either pay the piper now by voting yes for issue 3, or by voting no and entering the realm of unknown future costs which, by the way are inevitable and for which we will have no control.

By the way, who can I contact to get a nice big ” Vote Yes for Issue 3″ poster for my yard.

I support your hard work with my prayer at this time.   I know it will work out.  The Fire Department was started with the good intentions of the early members of our community.  Our Lord knows the heart of public safety as well as the needs of the community.

After reading so many “letters to the Editor” [NewsLeader] against the Northfield Center Fire Levy, I felt I had to write asking for the residents to vote “YES” for the Issue 3 Levy on August 2.  I have lived in Northfield Center for 56 years. Our Fire Department has always been there and has served our community well along with Sagamore Hills.

There was a time my family needed their services frequently and they were always responsive, compassionate and professional.  I’m tired of hearing that going to Macedonia or the Village will only cost the residents $375,000.00 which is only a third of what our levy is asking for.  The $375,000 contract proposal is ONLY to staff our Department with 2 crew members.

We will still need to pay for our station, our equipment and keeping both up-to-date.  I also like having a Fire Chief at our station and he has done a good job for our department.  I want to KEEP our Fire Department and ask our residents to vote “YES” on the Issue 3 Levy on Aug. 2nd.  We can join the Nordonia Hills Fire District when Macedonia and Northfield Village decide to amend their charters.

Thank You to our Trustees for letting us have a voice on this decision.  Yes or No at least we have a voice.

Mr. Buescher, your response to Richard Prusak was good but it did not go far enough.  I understand this due to your position so let me expound on your take.

There is a very well known clique in our town that has been against almost everything good during the past decade or more.  You know who they are;  Reville, Peppera, Yuzwa, Ford and now Mazzola and [Lou] Laguardia.  Reville is the quiet sneaky one and Laguardia is now the outspoken one.  Mr. Reville expounds on his so called financial expertise but me thinks that PNC Bank’s recent successful lawsuit against his company might show something different!

Why would anyone believe the false fire levy figures coming from these people?  They are all in this together to deceive you!  This clique gets together and writes all of the nasty editorials and pass out all of those Liar Fliers in the dead of night.  By the way, I liked how you coined that phrase when you first ran for Trustee!

In one of Laguardia’s Liar Fliers he said “OUTSIDERS SHOULD NOT DETERMINE OUR CHOICE” because he said that a Sagamore resident was heading the FOR campaign.  Rich James’s name is on all of the vote FOR issue 3 signs and fliers.  Mr. James heads the FOR ISSUE 3 P.A.C. and is a longtime Northfield Center resident.

Mr. Laguardia conveniently hides the fact that some Sagamore Trustees display Vote NO signs on their properties and their cohorts like Big Ed on the corner of Boyden and Highland in Sagamore and other outsiders have large vote no signs on their properties!  The proof is there for everyone to see.  Mr. Laguardia, if you live in a glass house it is not wise to throw stones!

What’s going on with the Newsleader?  This rag prints the same Vote NO editorial by M. Ford two weeks in a row and they let Peppera write two editorials against issue 3, which is against their own rules that have been imposed on many in the past.  This all stinks to high heaven. The people need to know what is really going on in our town!  People need to know how and why Sagamore and Macedonia are conspiring to influence our decision making process.  This is a planned take over!

I know the hell that you and John Romanik and Chief Risko and the few others who possess common sense and actually care about us are going through.  You could never pay me enough to be in your positions.  GOOD LUCK AND NEVER EVER GIVE UP!

Please, if you figure out who I am, do not use my name because I don’t want to hurt any of those clique people when they come around and try to threaten me like they have done to others!
