Summit County observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO—October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and County Executive Shapiro and Council are recognizing the bravery of breast cancer survivors, the compassion of their loved ones and caregivers, and the loss of family, friends, and neighbors to breast cancer. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, an estimated 338,900 women and 2,710 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the United States. Though many will battle and survive their diagnosis, an estimated 43,550 women and 530 men will not.

Breast cancer is second only to skin cancer among cancer diagnoses among women, with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. And yet, there is hope. 3.8 million people across the country have survived breast cancer. The courage and strength of all those who have battled breast cancer and their caregivers fuels the fight for better prevention, better treatment, and the race for a cure. By observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we join in our commitment to prevention, treatment, and a cure to cancer.

“I am humbled to see so many strong women fight this terrible disease,” said County Executive Shapiro. “We continue to make progress, but we cannot stop supporting our family and friends in their battles with breast cancer. So, step up, speak up, and wear pink!”

Residents are encouraged to wear pink tomorrow, October 21, 2022, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Locally the Susan G. Komen Foundation is hosting events. More information can be found here: komen.org.
