County Executive Shapiro and County Council Recognizing the Month of March as Women’s History Month in Summit County

Earlier this week, Summit County Council passed legislation that was approved by Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro recognizing the month of March 2018 as Women’s History Month in Summit County. The legislation, sponsored by Executive Shapiro and County Council member Paula Prentice recognizes the women of America, their historical achievements, as well as the struggles they have overcome and continue to face.

“As the first woman serving as County Executive in Summit County and the State of Ohio, I take great pride in joining my colleagues in declaring March 2018, Women’s History Month in Summit County,” said Executive Shapiro. “I want to especially acknowledge the women of Summit County and all of their incredible contributions to our community.”
Followed by President Carter’s proclamation of Women’s History Week in 1981, the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress in 1987 which resulted in the proclamation of the month of March as Women’s History Month.

The purpose of the declaration is to honor the women of the United States throughout the nation’s history and the contributions they have made, while fighting for the right to vote, the right to own property, gender equality, and enduring discrimination. “In Summit County, we have an incredible number of women who have broken the glass ceiling and who serve as role models for younger generations,” said Councilmember Prentice. “As women, we have come a long way, yet our journey is far from complete.”

“I encourage the citizens of Summit County to join us in acknowledging the month of March as Women’s History Month,” said County Council President John Schmidt. “This month serves as an important reminder of how hard women have fought for equality throughout history, and their hard work and achievements should be recognized.”
