Nordonia Students Join the Fight Against Blood Cancer

Ledgeview Elementary School students raised $5,621.90 for Pennies for Patients!

Macedonia, Ohio (May 9, 2018) – Leukemia affects more children than any other cancer, so The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Student Series program provides a meaningful way for kids to help other kids. The program engages millions of students from thousands of schools across the country, from grades K-12, to teach them how to set and reach goals and the value of community involvement. All programs are student-driven and designed to raise funds to support the LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

The students and staff at Ledgeview Elementary School did just that. In just two weeks, the school raised a record-breaking $5,621.90 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Students participated in online fundraising and change collection to make a difference in the fight against blood cancers. One student, Donovin Polimene, individually raised $920 and was given a family four pack of Cedar Point tickets for his efforts!

The school was officially named a Champion of Change in May 2018.

“It’s so amazing to see kids get excited about the fact that they are helping others,” said Erin Zaranec, Student Series Campaign Manager. “During their April assembly, the kids at Ledgeview joined our Hero Squad and they took their mission to raise money very seriously.”

The Northern Ohio Chapter recruited 558 schools to participate in Student Series in the 2017-18 academic year. Ledgeview Elementary has participated since 2010 and has raised more than $12,000 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during that time.

“By participating, not only will kids learn about making an impact, but about leadership, teamwork, philanthropy and what “doing good” for others can mean,” said Lindsay Silverstein, LLS’s Northern Ohio Chapter Executive Director. “It’s a program that is truly meaningful because kids learn that their efforts really make a difference. As children move through their years at school, they can grow with the Student Series.”
