Peninsula, OH – Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro, Summit County Engineer Alan Brubaker, PE, PS, and Peninsula Mayor Dan Schneider are pleased to announce that Akron-Peninsula Road in the Village of Peninsula will open in the early afternoon on Wednesday, November 24. Community members and media are invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for November 24 at noon.
The Village of Peninsula thanks Ohio Public Works Commission (O.P.W.C.) and the Summit County Executive’s team along with the Summit County Engineer’s Office for all their support. Helping to celebrate this event will be the Woodridge School Marching Band and Superintendent, the Valley Fire Department, and officials from Summit County. The opening of Akron Peninsula Road will allow the Village of Peninsula to reconnect just in time for the holidays.
Summit County was successful in securing emergency funds from the Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) to repair the Akron-Peninsula Road landslide area and relocate the roadway. The grant program provides up to 90% of the project’s costs with the Office of County Executive covering the 10% local share. The Summit County Engineer is administering the project on behalf of Peninsula.
“We’re very pleased to be able to help reconnect the Village of Peninsula. Cooperation and good working relationships with the Village, the County Executive, and the Ohio Public Works Commission made it possible to get this important road reopened,” said Summit County Engineer Alan Brubaker, PE, PS.
“Our County is at its best when all 31 communities are at their very best. This much needed improvement is a good investment and an example of how residents benefit when different levels and offices of government work together,” said County Executive Ilene Shapiro.
On November 17, 2020, an engineer hired by Peninsula to assess the road damage advised the Village that it was his professional opinion that Akron-Peninsula Road must be closed to protect public safety due a slope failure causing pavement from the road to crack and potentially slide into the Cuyahoga River. The Village closed the road on November 21, 2020.
The project includes moving Akron-Peninsula Road 25 feet away from the Cuyahoga River, embankment stabilization work, and river debris removal. The road is reopening with the asphalt base and intermediate course complete, with later work putting down the surface course and stream embankment stabilization work to be completed in the spring of 2022. Kenmore Construction is the contractor on the $717,574.00 project.
