SIGNS OF THE TIMES: The Latest from Longwood Manor

by: Les Berman / Longwood Manor Historical Society

Have you noticed the new city signs at the borders of Macedonia and surrounding locales? These brick Western Reserve-style signs have replaced the old wooden signs at the same locations. We’re happy to say that Longwood Manor was included in the placement of these new signs and now have a sign proudly proclaiming Longwood Manor’s name at our driveway entrance. This, plus the removal of foliage blocking the Manor house view from East Aurora Road, make it easier for patrons to locate Longwood Manor and attend our events. We are deeply indebted to Mayor Nicholas Molnar and the City of Macedonia for their support.

Also, our thanks to the City covering the installation of a new furnace in the Manor house just in time for the below-zero cold snap that hit our area the beginning of the year. Jackson Comfort Systems was on hand for a speedy response to our needs.

And speaking of events, get ready for another exciting season at Longwood Manor.

Our annual Ladies’ Teas have been so successful that this year we’re going to include a flower-arranging event for the 2025 Ladies’ Tea. Come join us for refreshments and gain some insight on decorating with plants and flowers. This will take place on Saturday, May 3rd. We will hold two sessions, from Noon until 2:00pm, and from 2:00pm until 4:00pm. Make something special for Mother’s Day and the ladies in your life.

Thursday, July 17th, 7:00pm, will again present the University Heights Symphonic Band, under the direction of Devlin Pope, and another great music presentation. This 50-piece concert band features marches, show tunes, and a mix of other concert favorites. Admission is free. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, maybe a picnic dinner. The Manor house will also be open for your visit.

Our annual Rummage Sale has been a big hit the past few years so we’ll be continuing it again the weekends of August 8th-9th and August 22nd-23rd, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Donations are accepted, but contact us in advance before bringing items up to be sure someone is at the Manor house to accept them. Please do not leave items outside the door as there is potential for damage from weather and to insure loss prevention. Do your Christmas shopping early; you never know, we might have that perfect gift!

What’s Halloween without a visit to the Haunted Manor? Once again Longwood Manor will be decorated for Halloween with spooky-but-friendly displays. We’ll be working in conjunction with Macedonia Parks and Recreation. We’ve had adults come in costume as well as the kids. This spooktacular event will be October 18th, time to be announced. Is Longwood Manor haunted? Come and find out!

Round out the year with our annual Christmas at the Manor on Sunday, December 14th, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. We’ll be decorated for the holiday and also feature a Christmas boutique for those last-minute gifts. We’re counting on another visit from that Special Guy from the North Pole, too.

Of course, you’ll find Longwood Manor Historical Society represented at this year’s various City festivals at Longwood Park. Stop by, say “Hi”, and look through our pictures and memorabilia on display.

Longwood Manor features an Open House on the last Sunday of the month from April through October, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. We’ll give you a tour and tell you about Longwood Manor, its honored resident, Colonel William Frew Long, first Mayor of Macedonia, and maybe some little known facts about Macedonia itself.

You can also visit our website, www.longwoodmanor.org, and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/Longwoodmanorhistoricalsociety/. We’re also now on the Instagram platform, at @longwoodmanorhs. We’re always interested in talking with anyone who knew the Mayor or can give us some background information on the Manor or the City or can add items to our museum.

Thanks for your time. See you soon at Longwood Manor.
