Summit County effort helps brighten the holidays for more than 800 children, including those in the Nordonia Hills area

AKRON, Ohio – A Summit County holiday initiative is helping bring extra cheer to children in foster care this season, including kids from the Nordonia Hills area.

Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro’s Office recently hosted a Holiday Collection Drive to benefit children and families served by Summit County Children Services (SCCS). Over the course of two weeks, staff from the Executive’s Office donated a vanload of toys and items ranging from Barbies and Play-Doh to Legos and Monster trucks.

Those donations will make their way to SCCS’s holiday workshop, where volunteers receive wish lists for each child. Volunteers then “shop” from the donated items, selecting gifts that match each wish list before wrapping them so every child has something special to open during the holidays.

Thanks to support from donors across Summit County, SCCS expects to provide extra holiday joy to more than 800 children currently in custody.

SCCS is the public children services agency for all of Summit County, which includes Nordonia Hills communities. In addition to foster care services, SCCS staff respond to reports of child abuse and neglect and handle thousands of calls each year to the agency’s anonymous, 24/7 abuse and neglect hotline at (330) 434-KIDS.

Residents in Nordonia Hills and throughout Summit County who would like to support Summit County Children Services’ 2025 Holiday Programs can learn more or make a contribution by visiting https://www.summitkids.org/holidayprograms/.
